Stevens, president, occupied the chair at the annual meeting of members of the Bulls Croquet Club, held in the pavilion on Friday afternoon. The report and balance was presented and adopted. The report read as follows: —Four meetings were held during the year, and members took a lively interest in the Club’s affairs. The club has a small membership but members enjoyed a good season’s play, the weather being favourable and the lawns in good playing order. During the year extra ground was obtained, making it possible to have one full-sized green, and one smaller one. Thanks arc due to Messrs Louisson and Devine, of Pamerston North, for generously donating the extra ground. During the season friendly matches were played with Feilding, Oroua and Marton Clubs, and members also took part in the Manawatu Croquet Association banner matches at Palmerston North, meeting Levin, Northern, Terrace End and Manawatu Clubs. All matches proved most enjoyable, and the Bulls Club had a fair measure of success. Members took part in the Manawatu Croquet Association’s Gala Day, held on the Manawatu green in March, and Mrs C. M. Broughton was successful in winning a trophy. In order to raise funds to lay down the new section of the green a Shop was held in May, and proved most successful, nearly £22 being made, and thanks are due to all who made donations, and assisted by their patronage. Thanks are due also to Mr G. H. Archer for his untiring and valuable assistance to the club at all times. The proceeds from the afternoon teas amounted to £ll 12s, which amount was a great help to the club’s funds. At the end of the season the club suffered a great loss through the departure of Mrs L. Green, one of the best players, and for several years the club’s honorary secretary, fulfilling the duties of that position with much ability. Mrs Green was entertained by members and lady friends before leaving, and was made a small presentation. The club is in a sound financial position, having a good credit balance to start the new season with. The greens have been well cared for by Mr D. Hillier, and there is every reason to look forward to a very successful season in 1929-30.
The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Geo. Ellis, Esq.; president, Mrs H. Stevens; vice-president, Mrs S. W. Ingram; hon. treasurer, Mrs C. M. Broughton; hon. secretary, Mrs E. AVilson; committee, Mesdames Stevens, Ingram, Larmer, Broughton, Ellery Simpson and AVilson; match committee, Mesdames Stevens and Ingram. Opening day. —It was decided to open the season on AVednesday, October 23, and to invite members of surrounding croquet clubs, kindred sports, and townspeople to the opening. The subscription fee remains the same as that of last year, viz., 15s. Affiliation. —It was decided to again affiliate with the Manawatu Association, and to enter for the Manawatu inter-club matches. The greens will be enlarged this season, extra ground being now fit for play, and the committee will meet the caretaker on the green on October 5 to lay out the new playing areas.
1 MARTON THE PICTURES Ono of those good old fashioned comedies about a good natured cop and his family, his trials and tribulations found in “Do Your Duty,” First National picture starring Charlie Murray will be screened at tho Marton Town Hall this evening. Charlie, as Tim Maloney, one of the finest, give a lovable characterisation, full of human nature, joviality, and the milk of human kindness. This is Murray’s natural character and ho transfers it easily t' the screen. William Beaudine directed the picture, and two First National players, Doris Dawson and Yola d’Avril have prominent parts. M.U.J.0.0.F. LOYAL MARTON LODGE The smallest attendance of members seen for a very long time was in evidence at a meeting of the above lodge on Friday evening, no doubt owing to the bitterly cold night and the attractions of the carnival bazaar. Business was disposed of in quick time and members wended their way to the Town Hall there to help swell the funds of their chosen queen. Two members were reported to bo on the sick list. A meeting of tho district management committee is to be held in Marton on October 18, and it was decided to hold a special meeting of the Lodge that evening and invite the members of the committee to bo present. Three new members were proposed. Discussion on several matters of moment was held over until next meeting on October 11, when a full attendance is expected.
