IN HEAVY SEAS
VESSELS IN COOK STRAIT. I Australian Press Assn. I WELLINGTON, Aug. 21. Terrific southerly winds, and high seas were encountered in Cook Strait last night by the Alatangi, engaged on the Wellington-Nelson run. The Alatangi en route to Wellington, frequently shipped heavy seas on the after deck, and some empty oil drums were carried over the side. Part of the railings to which they were lashed suffered damage. In the vicinity of The Brothers two portholes on the starboard side near the waterline were smashed, and water ' poured through into the second class bathroom, portions of the passenger accommodation being also flooded. Water also found its way into the dining saloon on the main deck. Temporary repairs were affected and the steamer arriv.ed five hours late. The Ngaio took twelve hours to cross to Picton instead of the usual four. At l one stage it took her 61 hours to cover 'lB miles. The Wahine arrived up to time from Lyttelton after a rough trip. The Alaori was 25 minut.es late at Lyttelton.
