The Australian golf championship was commenced at the Scatoun links in perfect weather yesterday. In the foursomes amateur championships, Ivo Whitton and Leagh Winser tied with F. Bulte and W. J. Fowler, each 154. Whitton and Winser gave nothing away on the greens all day and played a remarkably steady game fo.r 78 and 76. Nigel Smith and H. Morrison (with 80 and 76) and Sloan Morpeth and H. Hattersley also tied with 156. The holders of the foursomes title, Bettington and Hunter, was not present to defend it. In the professional event, stroke play 30 holes, Rufus Stewart retur'end a splendid 72 for his second round, finishing with a6O yards putt. His score was 146. Then came W. Bolger 147, F. Eyre 147, J. Mclntosh 154, A. J. Shaw 155. In inter-State matches, Victoria beat New South Wales by four matches to three, and Victoria beat South Australia by five matches to two. In the foursomes, Morpeth’s play in partnership with Hattersley was effective, though the young Sydney player also did well, but his iron shots were expensive. Morpeth’s best was a tec shot to the seventh of 161 yards, which finished six inches from the pin. The pair’s cards showed 78 out and in. The leading pairs are: Whitton and Winser, and Bulte and Fowler with 154 each. The play-off will take place during the week-end. A BRILLIANT DISPLAY MORPETH’S ACCURATE PUTTS. [ Australian Press Assn. ] Received Aug. 21, 9.50 p.m. ADELAIDE, Aug. 21. Morpeth, who has been ill for a few days, putted accurately, saving holes, other wise the result might have been disastrous. For example, he put a No. 4 iron through the green at the third and a chip shot from JO yards for three. Mclntosh and Shaw took 81 and 84 respectively, Bissctt 74, Whitton, Nettlefold and Heald 75 each and E. Rufus and Stewart 77.
