BUDGET PROPOSALS
CRITICISM AT PALMERSTON. [ Per Press Association. ] PALMERSTON N., Aug. 20. The Budget proposals were the subject of criticism by the general committee of the Manawatu A. and P. Association, which passed a resolution: “That this committee views with alarm the super tax on farming lands pro-, posed by the present Government and earnestly suggests that extra taxation should only apply to holdings of a value of £20,000 and upwards; also that the mortgage exemption remain as at present.” FARMERS ARE INDIGNANT. MR. POLSON’S VIEW DISCLAIMED [ Per Press Association. ] ASHBURTON, Aug. 20. A largely attended meeting of farmers to-day unanimously passed the following resolutions: — That this meeting emphatically protests against the proposal to increase the land tax, and pledes itself to do all in its power to prevent a proposal that will be ruinous to many farmers and not in the interests of the country as a whole. That if the statement attributed to Mr J. Polson, member for Stratford, speaking on the budget debate, is correct, that he, speaking on behalf of the members of the Farmers’ Union, joined in advocating increased taxation, this meeting of Mid-Canterbury farmers entirely dissociates itself from such views, and considers that Mr Polson has no authority for his statement.
STILL MORE PROTESTS. TARANAKI JOINS OUTCRY. [ Per Press Association. ) HAWERA, Aug. 20. A meeting of farmers and those engaged in commercial interests, the former being in the majority, convened by the South Taranaki Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, passed a resolution this afternoon protesting against the proposed amendments to the land and income taxation, as throwing an inequitable burden on the farming community, it being considered that other avenues should be explored to balance the budget deficit. The meeting suggested, that before any increase in taxation be approved, steps should be made to curtail the cost of government administration, and that a protest be made against the lowering of the mortgage exemption.
