INGENIOUS FRAUD

PERPETRATED BY GREEKS TWO “GOLD” STATUES [ Australian Press Assn. ] PARIS, Aug. 19. An ingenious fraud was perpetrated by a couple of Greeks. One, an apparently ignorant peasant accompanied by a Greek officer in uniform, allowed it to be known that he was in possession of two ancient statues weighing IOOIbs of pure gold. He sought a purchaser in a wily Parisian dealer, who estimated that the gold alone was worth 1,000,000 francs. He came to the hotel offering 250,000 francs, stipulating that he should be allowed to take a sample of the metal. The peasant agreed and suggested that a sample be taken from under the arms of the statues in order that their artistic value might not be impaired.

An analysis showed pure gold. The money was then paid over, but the dealer finds that he has paid for two pieces of guilded bronze, in which fragments of pure gold w r ere inserted under the arm. The Greeks have disappeared.
