YOUNG’ GIRL’S DEATH

BOLTING HORSE FALLS RIDER TERRIBLY INJURED. Agnes Ethel Ryland, who was admitted to the Wanganui Hospital on Saturday ,as the result of being heavily thrown and rolled upon by a bolting horse, passed away shortly after 8 a.m. yesterday morning, without regaining consciousness. Deceased was a daughter of Air and Mrs E. Ryland, who reside at 77 Jellicoc Street, Wanganui East. Prior to thc accident, the girl was holding the horse for Maurice Moran, a jockey employed by Mr C. Gordon, a trainer, while another horse was being brought from a paddock. The animal which Agnes Ryland was left in charge of had only a head-stall on, but the girl mounted tho horse and rode down Poutini Street and up Patapu Street. Her mount then bolted, and when crossing Tinirau Street slipped on the wet asphalt and fell, thc girl being thrown underneath. The horse attempted to rise but again came down on the girl. When the animal finally regained its feet the girl was dragged to the side of the road, her clothing apparently having become entangled in the horse’s hoofs. She was unconscious when she fell clear and was taken to the hospital suffering from terrible injuries. Agnes Ryland never showed signs of reviving.

An inquest will be held at 10 a.m. to-day.
