SOUTH TARANAKI

PATEA CYCLING Although weather conditions were unfavourable on Saturday - afternoon there was a full muster of members of the Carlyle Club to face the starter, eight in all lining up ,while two others who had been nominated, one from Alton and one from Waverley, were unable to start. The order in which the riders returned from the 18-mile run to Manutahi and back was as follows: W. Beer (6| min.) 1, A. Featonby (4 min.) 2, G. Signal (4 min.) 3, W. Close (5 min.) 4, R. Clarkson (30 sec.) 5, A. Clarkson (2 min.) 6, J. Julian (scr.) 7, W. Olds (8 min.) 8. The first man was a good three minutes ahead of the next three, who came in in a bunch. The Clarkson brothers, nearly two minutes later, arrived wheel to wheel, gaining fastest and second fastest times respectively, with 51 minutes 40 seconds. The last two were about another two minutes later. Next Saturday it is hoped that more of the Waverley enthusiasts will compete. SUCCESSFUL DANCE A very successful dance was held at the Whenuakura Hall on Friday night, in aid of St. George’s Church funds. Although a slight mishap to the lighting created a slight diversion at the beginning of the evening, this was soon remedied, and the pastime was enjoyed by all till late hours. For those who enjoy a quieter amusement, there were card tables. A -efreshing supper was handed round amid chatter and laughter, creating a pleasurable pause in the dancing and cards. The music was supplied by Mrs Carey and orchestra, greatly adding to the enjoyment of all. Among those present were, Mrs Honeyfield, Mrs Sheild, Mrs I. Honeyfield, Mrs J. Pearce, Mrs Petersen, Mrs Thorburn, Mrs P. Bourke, Mrs Wither, Mrs O. Gibson, Mrs F. Parsons, - Misses Bosley, Honeyfield, Sheild, Heckler. Dcrrett, Gibbings, Petersen, L. Adams, P. and E. Bourke, Wood, Thorburn, Moore, Kenworthy, Beck and many others.
