TAIHAPE A. AND P. ASSOCIATION The annual meeting of the Rangitikei Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held on Saturday afternoon when the president (Mr A. R. Fannin) presided over a large attendance. The chairman presented the annual report which read as follows: “The financial position of the Association, as members will see by the figures given in the balance sheet, has decidedly improved and the debit balance has been considerably reduced. The profit on the year's working amounted to £6B 3s lOd. These figures are arrived at after allowing for the purchase of crockery which cost the Association £33 15s. The crockery in addition to being used by ourselves, is hired out to different social functions and for which the Association charge hire. It had been hoped that the overdraft would be wiped out this year and this object could have been attained if all members had paid up their subscriptions. {Since the balance sheet has been prepared the sum of £l6 has been received under the heading. The committee again urge members to be punctual in the payment of their thereby avoiding interest to the bank, on overdraft. 1 ‘The annual show was held on the 23rd and 24th January, 1929, and was an unqualified success, entries in most sections being more numerous than in the last few years. The committee strongly urge the members to keep up entries in the'stock classes in the coming year, which will tend by competition to bring about the improvement in stock. 4 ‘The Association held their fourth annual ball on the 6th of June, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. The success of the function was again largely due to the untiring efforts of the ladies and a small committee of the members. “Your committee earnestly call upon the members to combine with the incoming committee to make the season one of the best the Rangitikei A. and P. Association have cxeprienced for many years.” The secretary announced that since the balance sheet was printed £27 had been paid into the Association s account and allowing £33 15s for the purchase of crockery, the actual profit on the year’s working was £95. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet the president said that although the overdraft at the bank had not yet been wiped out, it had -been reduced by £34 and he hoped that the Association would have a credit balance before the next annual meeting. He wished to to thank all members and office-bearers who had heped to bring about the improvement in the financial position of the Association which was now fairly sound. People sometimes asked if the Association served a useful purpose and in reply to that question he wished to state that the Association had played an important part in the progress of the district. Competition at the shows held under the auspices of the Association brought about improvement in stock and were also of great benefit to the young farmer who was anxious to make progress. Benefits were also de ri’-ed as the result of outside exhibitors visiting the Taihape show and also by exhibitors from this district competing at other shows It could thus be seen that the Association served quite a useful purpose. The report and balance sheet were adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Patron, Mr R. Wilkie; president, Mr P. Pedersen; vice-presidents, Messrs A. McColl, C. A. Stewart, J. Webb and D. Scott; treasurer, Mr A. W. Bicknell; secretary, Mr F. M. Marlow; auditor, Mr C. Masters; general committee, Messrs W. N. Anderson, J. Collier, E. R. Fannin, B. C. Fitzherbert, F. Garmonsway, H. Harf is, J. Morrison, W. McCombie, A. K. Overton, J. Quirk, H. Tobeck and J. B. Thomasen.

Before vacating the chair Mr Fannin said he would like to thank the committee and members for the manner in which they had furthered the interests of the Association. He would also like to express his appreciation of the manner in which the ladies had assisted to make the annual ball a success and also wished to thank those nonmembers of the Association -who had helped at the show. He greatly appreciated the manner in which the secretary Mr.F. M. Marlow had carried out his duties and would also like to mention the assistance which had been given by Mrs Marlow from time to time. The thanks of the Association was also due to the Press for much valuable publicity. A resolution was carried to the effect that it be a recommendation to the incoming committee that the' annual show be held sometime in February.

MAJESTIC THEATRE. Reginald Denny appears to-night at the Majestic in “The Night Bird.” This comedy has everything that makes for laughter and all the ingredients of the entertainment pie. The photoplay is a comedy-drama of a romanticcomedy or a thrill-comedy and it is all rolled into one riotous picture. There is a love theme running through the story—a theme of transcendent beauty all the more unusual, for “The Night Bird” is aimed for laughs and not only brings them down but touches the heart-strings as well. The cabaret dance scenes are well ahead of any previous production, and are wonderfully entertaining. •

INTOXICATED TAXI DRIVER. A plea of guilty was mad.g by George Montague Moss ,a licensed taxi driver at Taihape, when charged at the local Police Court yesterday with being in charge of a motor-car while in a state of intoxication. Accused was convicted and fined £l5 and had his license endorsed. He was also instructed to take out a prohibition order against himself. Sergeant D. J. O’Neill said that the accused indulged in liquor to excess last Saturday, and after driving along Robin Street in th'fi evening in his motor-car, Most turned into .Tui Street and ran into the back of a stationary motor lorry which was parked by the Federal Boardinghouse. The impact was so great that the brakes of the lorry were reelased and the vehicle careered down the street and crashed into two verandah posts in front of Mr J. H. Wacker’s bootshop and wrecked the verandah. Accused had

been convicted and fined £2 in 1927 for a similar offence and had been warned by the police about his drinking habits. There was a light at the back of the lorry with which Moss collided. The lorry was only about 17 yards away from a street light. Accused was arrested by Constables Corston and McDonnell. Mr R. C. Ogley, who represented defendant, stated that Moss denied that he came round the corner at the intersection of Robin and Tui Streets at a furious pace. Accused had informed counsel that one of .the headlights on his car was not functioning and consequently he failed to see the motor lorry. Moss was a married man with four children. He had been to the war and owing to injuries received while serving his country accused’s work was restricted, and*if his taxidriver’s license was cancelled he would b'd thrown out of employment, and owing to his war disability he would find it very hard to get another job. In delivering its verdict after a short retirement, the Bench remarked that it would be quite justified in cancelling defendants’s license, but did not propose to do so on this occasion, and intended to give Moss another chance. Messrs L. Daws, J.P., J. P. Aldridge, J.P., and A. Perrett, J.P., occupied he Bench.
