W.C.T.U.
A NEW BRANCH FORMED The various branches of the W.C.T.U. in Wanganui and the surrounding districts are very fortunate just now in that they are being visited by Miss MeLay, the organiser, and are receiving an impetus in their work through her timely suggestions and capable advice. A W.C.T.U. organiser’s life has been described as “Out on an exertion," not on an “excursion." Miss McLay arrived in Wanganui on July 2, and that evening she attended the meeting of the “Y" branch at Gonvillc. Two days later she attended the district executive of the W.C.T.U., and afterwards spoke at the Wanganui Central branch, where her fine address was much appreciated. During the whole of the month, Miss McLay was kept busy addressing meetings and trying to stir up interest by visiting the homes of members and others. Besides attending public meetings Miss McLay spoke at gatherings in private houses, including those of Mrs Rogers (Mayoress), Miss Wallace, Wanganui East, Mrs Irwin, Durie Hill, and Mrs Dixon, St. John’s Hill. Among the more noteworthy results of Miss McLay’s efforts was the formation of a new branch of the W.C.T.U. at Gonvillc, with the following officers: President, Mrs Stewart; vicepresident, M : Elliott; secretary, Mrs Newson; and treasurer, Mrs Hussey. Other very successful meetings were, one at Knox Church, when Miss M- Lay addressed the Bible classes, and a number of temperance pledges were signed; and the birthday party at Wanganui East W.C.T.U. The last days of the month were spent in and around Waverlcy, where, owing to sickness some of the meetings were not so well attended as they otherwise would have been. Miss McLay is an indefatigable worker, and a capable and interesting speaker. Her charm of manner afcd sense of humour are much enjoyed by all who have listened to her. It is to be hoped tftat many will avail themselves of the opportunity of hearing her speak at the forthcoming W.C.T.U. convention, which is to be held in St. Paul’s Hall on the evening of Wednesday, August 21 and morning. afternoon and evening on Thursday 22nd. All who do so are sure to feel well rewarded.
