TAIHAPE BOROUGH AFFAIRS. At the monthly meeting of the Taihapc Borough Council last Friday the following committee were adopted:—• (1) That the resignation of Mr J. Boyd as poundkeeper be accepted, and Mr R. J. Boyd appointed to the position. (2) That the estimates be forwarded to the Main Highways Board for the topdressing of the Main Highways within the Borough. (3) That quotations be obtained for a horse-drawn grass cutter. (4) That the foreman be instructed to grade all streets in the Borough regularly (5) That tenders be called for the continuation of the concrete kerbing and channelling in Hautapu Street to Kotare Street on the northern side and Huia Street on the Southern side. (6.) That tenders be called for the painting of the Town Clerk’s house at the some time as tenders are being called for the painting of the grandstand and that Paul and Bridson be asked to report on the condition of the roof (7) That Mr H. J. Fowler, traffic inspector for the Rangitikei County Council, be approached with reference to the carrying out of inspection work in the Borough. (8) That the following applications for building permits be granted:—H. J. Bowater, garage, Pipi Street, R. Cleaver, garage Kiwi Road. H. A. Holmes, alterations to dwelling in I Eagle Street. (9) That the Railway Department be advised that if they are prepared to supply pipes for the draining of Mataroa Road in front of the railway cottages the Council will supply the necessary labour. The following stock was killed at the abbatoirs last month:—29 cows, 49 bullocks, 293 sheep, 14 lambs and 54 pigs. The Council adopted the following recommendations of a special meeting of the Works and Electric Light Committee, to consider the question of treeplanting:— (1) That Dr Mac Diarmid be thanked for his kind offer to donate trees for planting in Kokako Street, and same be accepted. (2) That the sum of £25 be set aside for the purpose of planting decidious trees in the borough, exclusive of reserves and domains and the matter of supervising the planting be left in the hands of Councillor Christensen. The Finance Committee made the following recommendations:— (1) That a report be obtained on the condition of the Town Hall piano, and an introduction given that on no account is the piano to be moved from its present position (2) That the subsidy to the Library Committee be paid quarterly. The recommendation was adopted. The Finance Committee reported having interviewed the lessee of the Town Hall, and the committee recommended that steps be taken to acept the surrender of the lease of the Town Hall with the present lessee, and the Town Clerk be instructed to communicate with Messrs Walters Spence Ltd., relative to the bond for six months rental. The report was adopted. RUGBY FOOTBALL. As a 4 4 curtain-raiser ” to the senior representative match between Taihape and Wanganui, junior trial match between Taihape A and B teams will be played. RUGBY AFFAIRS The weekly meeting of the manage meat committee of the Taihape Rugby Union was held On Monday evening when the president Mr J. Quirk presided over a satisfactory attendance. The Taihape Borough Council wrote regarding the Union’s request for a percentage of the grandstand takings, and stated that the matter would be reviewed just before the opening of the next football season. The letter was received. A letter was read from the Huia Football Club informing the Union that the Huia junior team had with? drawn from the junior competition. It was decided to fix August 3, as the date of the second match for the Town and Country cup at present held by the town team. Mr J. Quirk was appointed manager of the Taihape team to play Wanganui at Taihape next Saturday. DEFRAUDATION ALLEGED 4 4 On May 21. 1929 at Taihape, with intent to defraud, did from L. A. J. Emery, the sum of £2 14s 3d by means of a valueless cheque for £5 10s, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand:

Young” and made payable to 4 4 self” was the charge preferred against William Isgram, a man with several aliases and no fixed abode, who appeared before Mr A. Perrett, J.P.. at the Taihape Police Court yesterday. Accused was remanded until to-mor-row afternoon when the monthly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court will commence. HUNTERVILLE PERSONAL Dr Elizabeth Gunn visited Hunterville School yesterday. Mr and Mrs S. A. R. Mair are visiting Wellington and will return home to-night. Miss Jean Ramson, of New Plymouth, is visiting Hunterville. Friends of Mrs F. R. Ching will be pleased to learn she is progressing satisfactorily after her recent illness. Mr Lloyd Hammond has been approached to contest the vacant seat on the Rangitikei County Council, and has consented to do so. Mr Hammond is a member of the Rural Credits Board, president of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union, president of the Rangitikei Rugby Union, and a Director of the Rata Dairy Co. SCOTS SOCIETY A well attended meeting of the Rangitikei Scots Society was held on Monday night, Mr R. G. Dalziell presiding. A vote of sympathy with Mrs Simpson and family was carried. A motion moved by the chairman that no ball be held this year was carried by a large majority. A meeting to be called at some future date by the two chieftains will be held for the purpose of electing a new chief. GENERAL NEWS The annual meeting of the Rata Dairy Coy. will be held on Saturday, August 3. Returning from Hunterville on Sunday a car occupied by Mr J. Linklater, M.P., and Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., collided at Norwood corner with a car driven by Mr Garvey. The cars were damaged.but no one was injured. The contractors for the Town Hall expect t 6 be out of the building by the end of the present week. The hall looks well and will be as up to date as that of any country town in the Dominion. MANGAONOHO RIFLE CLUB Manganoho Rifle Club had a visit from six Sil verhope residents on Thursday last and an enjoyable evening resulted. As a result of their visit, the establishment of a Rifle Club in Silverhope is mooted. It is the intention of the club to hold an old time dance next Friday in aid of funds towards cost of another rifle. The club has a steadily increasing membership and has proved a decided social adjunct to the district. At a meeting of the committte Mr J. H. Hardie was secretary in place of Mr F. Spodnley, who has left the district, and Messrs K. G. Dalziell, F. H. Powell and F. Paget were added to the committee. Last Week’s Shoot.

Smith, P. C. Guthrie, L. Bull, A. W. Porter, and G. F. Shanley (secretary). Accounts were passed for payment. A resolution was carried that a letter of sympathy be written to Mr R. K. Simpson, as selector, and Mrs Simpson and family, sympathising with them in their bereavement. Dr Mitchell, the president of the club, handed in his resignation. On the motion of Messrs Smith and Guthrie appreciation of his valuable services were placed on record and he was wished every success in the future.
