AMUSEMENTS

KENTUCKY JUBILEE SINGERS The Kentucky Jubille Singers, who are to make their only appearance here under the direction of J. and N. Tait at the Opera House on Monday next, were one of the first organisations to be approached by the directors of the “Talkies” and their records have been featured throughout the United States of America. It is said the Kentucky Jubilee Singers present a wonderful entertainment and they have been featured at the leading concert halls and theatres in America and England. Their entertainment in a series of novel settings comprises plantation songs, negro spiritual sacred songs, comedy scenes and songs modern and other composers. Their range of programme is remarkable, their repertoirs comprising no fewer than one hundred and fifty items. They are all coloured artists and their salaries put together amount to as much as that usually paid to a big comic opera organisation. Their opening in Auckland created a furore. A critic says: “Many wonderful occasions have been witnessed in His Majesty Theatre, but never in its long history has so much enthusiasm been displayed as that which took place on Saturday night when the Kentucky Jubilee Singers made their initial appearance in New Zealand. Although the preliminary announcements may have appeared to be extravagant they really gave but a poor indication of the magnificent singing and artistry of the greatest organisation of coloured performers which has ever appeared in Auckland. It would be superfluous to select any one number or artist for special praise, because they all combined to make up the best and most wonderful entertainment yet presented to the public of Auckland. The Kentucky Jubilee Singers can make their audience sad, sentimental or merry and their perfect harmony is a joy to hear. If Saturday night’s triumph is a criterion then the success of the New Zealand tour is assured.” The box plan opens on Friday at H. I. Jones and Son’s.
