A BLAZE IN SYDNEY
LARGEST FIRE SINCE 1925 FLAMES SWEEP LARGE STORES [ Australian Preet Assn. J MELBOURNE, July 22. The most spectacular and destructive fire which has occurred in the city since the Town Hall fire in 1925 swept through the premises of Payne’s Bon Marche, Bourke Street. The flames spread to adjoining premises, including a furniture warehouse owned by Paterson’s Limited, three floors of which were badly damaged. Payne’s was completely gutted. One hundred firemen fought the flames for four hours. There were thousands of spectators. The damage is estimated at £400,000. The cause of the outbreak is unknown.
