RELIEF FUNDS

WHAT WANGANUI IS DOING PUBLIC MEETING TO BE HELD. Preparations are being made for Wanganui to take its share of the responsibility of providing relief funds for the sufferere in the earthquake zone.

The Mayor (Mr W. J. Rogers) has sent a telegram to the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Ward), approving of the proposal to establish a central fund, the aim in this connection being to handle relief under one head with Government supervision. With this Mr Rogers entirely agrees. Owing to indisposition he has been unable to deal with relief proposals, so far as Wanganui is concerned,, as early as he would havje wished, but. a public meeting is to be held on Thursday night, to discuss the matter.. . The Wanganui Garrison Band have already set matters in train and a stall is to be conducted in the Avenue on Friday. For the purpose., of. stocking this those able to do so, are asked to make donations of saleable articles. A suggestion has been made, .that on Saturday afternoon collections be taken up on Spriggens Park from Rugby patrons, but no doubt the whole sche.me, in so far as the city is concerned, will be handled in a systematic manner by a central committee, to be elected at the public . meeting. Bands and local bodies desiring to assist could co-operate and thus, swell the general fund and make Wanganui’s total contribution what it should be. Wanganui City Fund The following telegram has been received by Mr Rogers from the Prime Minister; “Many thanks for your telegram and also for the information conveyed in it. Pleased to note you have adopted the suggestion of paying donations for relief of earthquake sufferers into public account to be administered by special central committee. fcyrr Joseph Ward.” The Mayor has opened a fund at the City Council Chambers, where donations will be received as well as .at the “Chronicle” office.
