WANGANUI ASSOCIATION SATURDAY’S MATCHES The second series of club matches in the various local hockey competitions was staged at Gonvillc Park on Saturday. Thc play showed definite improvement over that displayed in the opening matches and gives promise of many exciting contests later in the season. Thc ground was in good order and there was a fair sprinkling of spectators. MEN’S SENIOR GRADE STAR A AND HINEMOA It was expected that thc Star A and Hinemoa game would produce a close contest and the prediction was justified, though tho final score showed a comfortable margin in Hinemoa’s favour. Star attacked from the initial bully and Hinemoa had a hot time keeping their goal intact. Play was rushed to the other end, but Star were quick to gain thc upper hand and Hughes did well to save from Latham. Three penalty corners followed and Hinemoa were penned in their circle for some time. Hughes stoppod two good shots from these. At last Hinemoa raised the siege and in a raid to the other end, Oldridge and Conncl were prominent with neat short passing. Adams cleared at thc last moment, but Mclntyre intercepted and set thc yellow forwards on attack once more. Finally Pull received and his shot, though a weak one, trickled past the goalie: Hinemoa 1; Star A nil. Star set out to even the scores, but in Cave and N e Hughes, met exceptionally strong defensive units, Potbury led one raid and passed infield to Latham whose shot N. Hughes effectively cleared. Tizard then had a drive from ten yards’ range, but the goalie again made a splendid save, putting the ball round thc post. Play slowed down somewhat and for some time remained clear of tho circle at either end. Then Star were cornered for a break in defence. Connel worked a very neat scheme to draw the onrushing Star forwards aad allowed Oldridge to have an uninterrupted drive lor goal, which the centreforward turned to goo acount: Hinemoa 2; Star A nil.
The second spell saw the yellow come away with a strong rush and a corner resulted in their favour. This proved resultless but Star could not raise tho siege for long. Cornered once more, they were too slow in moving out and Olridge rattled the ball into the net; Hinemoa 3; Star A nil.
Though thc game seemed to bo won ami lost now, Star were not done with anil set up a hectic onslaught on the yellows’ goal. All port made a good attempt which just missed and then Wright almost goalcd, “sticks” giving Hinomoa timely relief. Flay swung to tho other end. Pretty passing between Connell and Oldridge had the Star defence badly rattled and when lull was given possession, ho scored an easy goal. Hinomoa 4; Star A nil. There was not much time left for play, but Star made great efforts to reduce the leeway. Latham had hard luck with a shot which hit the post. A couple of corners were of no avail and then Potbury made a great run on the right wing, but Cavo cleared just in time and the game ended with the score unaltered. Hiuemoa 4; Star A nil. Messrs. Parton and Howell refereed. OLD BOYS AND WESLEY The first spell of the Old Boys-Wes-ley game was very even and Wesley, wit’ a team considerably weakened through illness, made a surprisingly good showing. In the second session, however, Old Boys definitely showed their quality and ran out winners by & wide margin. Scorers for the winners were: Loads-* man (3), Le Brim (2), Gibbs and Williamson 1. Old Boys 7; Wesley nil. Messrs Howartson and Spurdie w fereed.
