BRIEF LIBERTY
PRISONER AT LARGE CAPTURED AT CASTLECLIFF A man wearing au overcoat and pyjamas did not excite muelr Curiosity amongst some residents of Springvale, who saw him in that locality at 7 o clock on Saturday morning, as it was concluded that he was a mushroom nunter. Actually he was a prisoner, named George VV. Hastings, about 54 years of age, who had been transferred to the Wanganui Hospital a week earlier for treatment to an injury to his hand and had succeeded in escaping from the institution at 2.30 a.m. Clad in the light attire referred to, he made his way to bpringvale. From there he went over to Castlecliff in the morning and took refuge in tho lupins. The police were despatched to the scene and, after scouring the locality, tho escaped man was discovered and captured by Constable 1 Docherty the same afternoon, in the shrubbery near the Castlecliff Hotel. Hastings has been declared an habitual criminal and has been in and out of gaol during the past 30 years. About 18 months ago, when a prisoner he made a bid for liberty but was soon recaptured and sentenced to bread and water for ten days.
