HARBOUR BOARD

FORTHCOMING ELECTIONS MR C. F. AHLLWARD NOT STANDING. Reports having for some time been current that Mr C. F. Millward was a probable candidate for the Harbour Board at the forthcoming elections, a “Chronicle” representative interviewed him yesterday. *‘While I am not in agreement with the prcs.ent Harbour Board’s policy which has resulted in the neglect of the inner harbour, and believe that I could do some good for the port, I am not inclined to stand this time,” said Afr Millward. “I think I can claim to have done my share of work on the Harbour Board already. lam firmly convinced that the future of thj city and district is to be decided by the younger business men. I would prefer that those whose future interest lies in the city’s development should take a hand in the shaping of the board’s policy to-day. Younger men will be here when the results of their work are made manifest. They should, therefore, shoulder to-day’s burdens. I appreciate the invitation extended to me by the commercial community, but believe I will be doing more good by making way fbr a younger candidate. “Aly experience and knowledge are always available to Harbour Board members, and I shall be most happy to supplement the efforts of anyone who will work io develop the port on sound business lines.” Asked whether he knew of any young men likely to stand for the Harbour Board, Air Afillward said that influential members of the community had already made a move in a e rtain direction, but he was not in a position to divulge anyth?ng just at the present moment. “Anyway,” ho remarked smilingly, the position will soon be • cared up for I understand nominations close on April 18 next.”
