STRUCK BY EXPRESS
MOTOR-CAR WRECKED DRIVER’S MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. [ Ter Press Association. 1 TE AWAMUTU, April 5. The daylight limited express, shortly after eleven o’clock, collided with a five-seater car in To Awamutu station yard. The car was following closely behind a lorry. The only occupant was the driv.er, Wallace Webster, aged about 21. Apparently he failed to notice the train. The lorry got clear of the crossing, but the express hit the rear of the car and reduced it to an unrecognisable heap of wreckage, which was entangled in the cow catcher and carried some distance before the express was brought to a standstill. Webster had his right foot torn off at the ankle. He was conscious when extricated. It is stated that apart from the loss of the foot only minor bruises wore sustained. His escape from death was miraculous. Another fortunate escape was the experience of Joy Whitehous’e, aged 5, who ran from a path in front of a car and fell between the wheels. The car passed over her, coming to a stop in its own length. The child was extricated uninjured.
