A POKER GAME
ILL-CHOSEN VENUE SEQUEL IN POLICE COURT. [ Special “Chronicle” Service ] AUCKLAND, April 5. Playing a quiet game of poker in the street in Freeman’s Bay recently, cost three youths exactly £1 10s a hand. The trio, J. Estall, J. Williamson and B. J. Patterson, were charged at the Police Court this morning with gaming with cards. ‘‘The three youths,” said Sub-Inspec-tor McCarthy, “were having a game of poker in a quiet street in Freeman’s Bay on a recent Sunday. It is not a heinous offence, but the police are anxious to stop it in the public streets in this locality.” Mr Sullivan, who represented the card players, advanced pleas of guilty in each case. “Public games are forbidden on Sundays, so what are. these young men to do?” asked Mr Sullivan. •‘Good healthy games should be allowed after church on Sundays. These youths areall hard workers who have never been in trouble before.” The Jined each £1 10s
