THE WENDY HUT
My Dear Childi en, — Goodness, how quickly the Easier holidays flew by. No sooner were they commenced than it was time to return once more to our tasl(s, or so it seemed. However, I hope you all enjoyed the short respite from your studies, and that each of you received a lovely big Easter Egg on Good Friday morning. I did, but Ido not know whom I have to thank for this kmd and thoughtful action. The stamp bore the Marton postmark, and now, will some one please own up? Well, my dears, / have long promised you a competition, but what it Was going to be I Was at a loss to tell j;ou. However, 1 have decided to have something we have not had before, so chose the following competition. I will now tell you all about it. You see, our "Hut" has now become such a tremendously important organisation that I have felt it is absolutely necessary that we should have a motto. From the splendid lot of mottoes I shall keep after awarding the prizes I Want to be able to select the “just right” one as our motto for any particular weekYou now know what is expected of you! Perhaps you will decide to make a really bright and cheery motto for us. 1/ery good! Make it either a couple of lines of poetry or a few words of prose. Perhaps you think you will make a motto to encourage the "Hut'' to “Keep on Keeping On!” and to stick together for another twelve months. Excellent! Send it along! The thing you have to be very, very careful about is to see that your notto is quite original. You must not copy from a book, a magazine, or i newspaper; and you must not ask anyone to suggest a motto to you. They are to be our own mottoes, composed entirely by ourselves. Now about some rules. We must, of course, have some to govern our competition. 1. Your mottoes must be in by April 13. Address them to “Wendy,” c/o the Editor, "Chronicle,” Box 105, Wanganui. 2. —Name, address and age must be clearly stated on each entry, 3. Your Work must be orginal, quite unaided by anyone. Ihe signature of some grown-up relative or teacher will not be required, my dears, for I trust you. 4. If you send a motto in poetry, you must not write more than two lines; if in prose, a few words will stand quite as good a chance of winning a prize as twenty! The prizes I shall award will be half-a-crown each for the best three mottoes sent in. So now, children, work hard, and just see what splendid mottoes you can send to me. Oh! How busy our helpers have been this week, and I must now commence to thank those who have worked so hard to help along our good causes. For our “Relief Ship," “High Admiral" sent me two baby’s singlets; “Lone Scout" a parcel of books, and “Sweet Carnation" a baby's jacket. Many thanks for your splendid help, dears, your /find and thoughtful actions will one day be many times rewarded. Our Stamp Collection has received additions from “Bubs," “Little Miss Goldilocks," “Yellow Blossom," “The Mocking Bird," “Rexona Boy,” “Perlycross,” “AU Baba," “Rexona Girl,” “High Admiral" and “Rose Marie.” The Card Exchange has benefited also by additions from “Princess Magnolia," “Bubs,” "Dolly Carden,” “Rexona Girl,” and “Rexona Boy." Many thanks, my dears, for your splendid help. I must now close, but before I do 1 have to thank "Christmas Rose," of Westmere, for her great kindness in sending me such a lovely bag of delicious apples. Your kindness, my dear, simply overwhelmed me, and I 'an never thank y°u enough. Well, dears. I must really say good-bye now, so to each one of you I send a huge /f’ss and a hug from your affectionate —
