CINEMA ART AND UFA NEWS The age of the sterotyped female motion picture characters —the dollfaced sweet girl, and the dark-eyed vamp and she-devil —is passed, not to the detriment of the motion picture industry. Modern producers are constantly searching for new faces, new styles of acting and for individuality in face, figure, and dramatic expression. When Greta Garbo was first presented to American audiences, her appearance was nothing short of a revelation. It is safe to predict that the same thing will happen with regard to Gerda Maurus in the latest F. Lang production, “The Spy,” which will be released shortly in New Zealand through Cinema Art Films. Gerda Maurus is surely not a beauty of the old style. She is a character, and the personification of individuality. In “The Spy” she plays the part of a female crook, and a clever, heartless spy, reformed by love. Her work in this part has been enthusiastically acclaimed by the critics of every country in Europe.
