MARTON A. AND P. SHOW
SUCCESSFUL FROM ALL ASPECTS Many Entries: High Standards LARGE CROWDS ATTEND FOR OPENING DAY Marton Park was thronged yesterday on the occasion of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s sixteenth annual show. The exhibition was in every way a success —entries were a record, competition was keen and there was a wide variety of entertainment for patrons. The horse section was usually large, the judges having a strenuous day’s work in deciding the various events, while sheep and cattle classes held their own as compared with former years. In *ihe home industries section entries were doubled, and keen interest was sustained in the children’s classes. The gate returns, which amounted to £l3B, reflected the popularity of the display.
The show was officially opened by Mr J. T. Hogan. M.P. for the district, who complimented the officers on the splendid exhibition, and referred to the steady growth in the total mmber of entries. In 1916 the total was 608; in 1928 it was 1299. The speaker also drew attention to the fact that the Rangitikei district stood third in New Zealand in the number of sheep within its boundaries. Rangitikei's total was 1.036,000, so that it would be seen that it was a most important sheep-raising area. 14 The time has eome, n continued Mr Hogan, “for a big forward move in production. It is all very well to assist the farmer who is on the land, but there is another aspect that must not be neglected by the new Government. That is the giving of access to the land to those who wish to take up holdings. There is a land hunger. Every time the Government opens up a new block it is besieged with applications and inquiries. However, at present I have no information for them, but I hope that when this Government gets into its stride it will give opportunities to get on the land.' * The prize list as as follows: Points Prizes.
