The death has occurred at Gisborne, of Mr Ewen Cameron, 89, a pioneer settler of Poverty Bay. He came here with bullock drays while in the employ of Sir Donald McLean. lie was born at Inverness, Scotland, and came to New Zealand in 1860. He was engaged in fighting Maori rebels in the Waikato during the early years, and settled in Poverty Bay in 1870. He had lived for 55 years on the one property at Bushmere, for the title of which he fought the Maori claimants for 25 years. He was a noted judge of stock and an ’enthusiastic member of th e A*, and p. Society, and spared enthusiasm for Caledonian associations and ploughing matches in the earlier days.
