The chairman of the Council, Air Barber, informed a "Chronicle” reporter yesterday that there was eve.y likelihood of the road in question being tursealcd 'Within two years’ time. From Eoxton to Himitangi (5 miles) heavy reconstruction work was under way with a view to laying down a permanent surface next summer. For the balance o fth c road Himitangi to banson, the preliminary survey had beeu completed and plans wer e now out with a view to being placed before the Highways Board very soon. The chairman paid a tribute to the timely assistance being given to county councils by the Highways Board. The situation hau been saved, for the ratepayers, as in many cases where an arterial road ran through light or hilly country, it would, have beeu impossible for the land to have borne the cost of a modern highway. Air Barber also referred to the progress being made in breaching th e gap in the tar-seal between Sanson and Palmerston North. Hot mix preparation was now being laid down between Sanson and Alt. Stewart and construction work was going on between Alt. Stewart and Awahuri with a view to tarsealing this year. The same work was being done in the Kairanga county. In both counties tar surfacing was being done at the rate of 10 chains a day, th e plant being used one fortnight m one country and the following fortnight. in the other.
