RACE AGAINST TIME
BYRD’S EXPEDITION
SUPPLY SHIP’S THIRD TRIP,
[ Special “Chronicle” Service ] AUCKLAND, Feb. 8,
The latest report received by Mr R. Brophy, second in command of tho Byrd expedition, is that the’ Eleanor Bolling is approaching the New Zealand coast at top speed.
“I have been in constant touch with the vessel,” said Mr Brophy, “and have issued instructions that ©very ounce of speed that can be got out of the ship must be obtained, so that she will reach Dunedin on February 14 instead of the following day. The Eleanor Bolling must be away again 3? hours after her arrival, and during that time the vessel will load 500 tout of gear, including an aeroplane, a motor car, 5000 gallons of benzine and 4000 gallons of other oils. Every minute counts now.
Mr Brophy will leave Auckland tonight or to-morow morning for Wellington and Dunedin.
