OPERA IN BERLIN
VISIT FROM LA SCALA. [Australian Press Assn.| BERLIN, Jan. 8. For the first time the entire ensemble of thc famous La Scala Opera House at Milan, including the orchestra of 100, the chorus of 130 and the entire staff of soloists and the ballet are coming to Berlin, to present five or six operas, under the conductorship of Signor Arturo Toscanini. La Scala at Milan is perhaps the most famous opera house in the world. Signor Arturo f|, oscanini was born in Parma in 1867. He first conducted in 1886, when suddenly called up at Buenos Aires to conduct “Aida,” the regular conductor being unavailable. He was playing thc ’cello in the orchestra. In 1898 he went to Milan from Turin. He was conductor at the New York Opera House from 1907 to 1921. Ho is the most eminent of living conductors, especially in the operas of Verdi and Wagner. He has conducted premieres of many modern operas, including Leoncavallo’s “Zaza” and “Bajazzo.” awd Uuccini’s “Tuxaadot. ”
