In Town and Out

First Call for the New Year. The Wanganui Fire Brigade was given an early atait in the calls for 1929. The first for the new year was to Rangitikci Street and was received at 1.35 a.m. yesterday. The alarm, however, proved a false one.

Rainy New Year’s Day. The -weather proved most fickle in Wanganui yesterday. After a bright, clear sky in the morning, a drizzle set in at about 12 o’clock. As a result, a large number of picnickers at the beach and oh the river were caught unprepared. The rain affected the tennis tournament, only .14 matches being played during the day.

The Tennis Tournament. Several innovations have been carried out by the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association in connection with its New Year tournament. Among the most important is improved seating accommodation, built tier upon tier, allowing followers of the more important matches to obtain an excellent view of the progress of play. The handing over of the catering to the ladies also marks another departure, and in this connection in particular, patrons have had no cause for regret.

Students’ Frolics. The combined efforts of the Victoria College students, who were in Wanganui for the purpose of opposing a Wanganui eleven ih a cricket match, did much to brighten the festivities at Cook’s Gardens on Monday evening. Dressed in sports clothing and with college blazers adding colour to an already bright scene, they joined in the evening’s fun to the full, especially good being their representation of a modern ballet and the manner in which* they helped the community singing.

Looking After the Motorist. Evidence of the efficient manner in which the various automobile associations look after the interests of motorists is to be seen in every town of any consequence in New Zealand and on all arterial roads. In this connec. tion Wanganui is well to the fore. In. formation is supplied, at the motorists’ camp at Aramoho and is also posted in the window of the secretary’s office, Maria Place, while a notice on Anzac Parade, indicates the condition of the Parapara Road to Ractihi, in addition to which the information given daily by the “Chronicle” has proved very useful.

Rain Mars River Excursion. Enticed out by the clear blue sky of the early part of the morning, a largo number of holiday-makers yester. day resolved to visit Hipango Park. They were conveyed by two steamers and a launch to the picnicking ground but had no sooner arrived there, about noon, than a drizzle set in. As there was no improvement in the weather at two o’clock the steamers left on the return journey. A sharp shower was experienced shortly after leaving the park but on arrival at the Town Wharf at 4 o’clock the sky had cleared again. The launch left late in the afternoon for a trip, arriving home at 7 o’clock.
