ON THE GREENS CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT WANGANUI CENTRE TITLE WON BY LONDON The third round of post section play in the Wanganui Bowling Centre’s tournament was commenced on Monday morning in a light shower but luckily the weather cleared and the conditions were more pleasant although the greens were still heavy. Results were as follow: Third Round. —London 21 v. Benefield 15; Armstrong 9 v. Tilley 28. Fourth Round. —Benefield 19 v. Tilley 15; London (with two lives) had the bye. Fifth Round.—Benefield 21 v. London 13. In this game Benefield’s team settled down quickest, scoring a brace of twos. Two singles to London and the same to St. John’s rink made the board read 6—2 after the 6th. head- A three to Benefield, two to London and then three singles to Benefield made the score: Benefield 12, London 4 on the 11th head. The 12th and 13th heads showed London’s men at their best, a 4 and 3 making them 11 to 12. The 14th head built up in London’s favour and Benefield burnt the head. The replay saw London draw level. Benefield scored a single and two and London a single on the 17th head —13 — 15. Another single followed for Benefield and on the 18th head he was lying 3 when London burnt the head. The replay again saw Benefield lying 3 till London drove one out when endeavouring to again kill the head. The 20th head was a well-played one, all the players altering the head, Benefield trailing jack a little for 3. London drove and hit the jack, but it sprung forward, leaving Benefield one up. Benefield played a block which made London go just a fraction wide. The 21st head was a tightly played one, Crawford just missing killing the head. London was more successful but again a forward spring gave Benefield two shots, the game thus ending: 21—13.

The result of this game left the same teams, with one life each, to play off the final yesterday morning.

The Final Flower, Warden, Crawford, London (Wanganui) 19 beat Rowling, McMillan, Wight, and Benefitld (St. John’s) 14. First Head. —London was 2 up till Wight drew shot. London drove it out. —London 2; Benefield 0« Second Head. —The Wanganui rink lay shot till London flicked kitty to an opposition bowl. —Benefield 1 to 2.

Third Head.—A short one. Rowling and McMillan drew touchers, Warden saving one, the other players did not alter.—2—2. Fourth Head.—McMillan drew 2 shots and Wight trailed for 3. Crawford saved two. —Benefield 3, London

Fifth Head.—Flower drew a toucher and McMillan a good second* Warden tapped an opponent’s bowl into shot and Crawford flicked kitty for 2 down. Benefield pushed in a short bowl of London's for shot but saved with his second, scoring two. —5—2. Sixth Head. —Flower lay shot till McMillan trailed for two. Crawford drew shot but Wight got one closer. Crawford altered the lie of the head with a fast one but St. John’s still lay one.—

{Seventh Head—Warden lay shot till Wight drew the absolute but Crawford robbed him. Benefield got the shot with a runner.—7 —2.

Eighth Head. —Wanganui lay two till Benefield drove and reversed the score. London saved with a perfect draw—--3—7. Ninth Head. —This was a longer one. The leaders were wide. McMillan turned in an opponent’s bowl and Warden drew another and Crawford a third. London made it four but Benefield saved and scored one.—B —3.

10th. Head. —A good light between the leads left Rowling with 2. Benefield added another but London promoted a short bowl and scored.—4—B. 11th. Head.—The leads and twos were wide. Crawford drew a good one and his side lay three but Wight saved with a great shot.—9—4. Twelfth Head—A light rain had set in and the green got heavier. Rowling lay shot and McMillan rested Flower’s and added another. Wight made it 3. Crawford saved with a good shot and London, with a perfect bowl, drew another. Benefield missed his drive.— London 6; Benefield 9. Thirteenth Head.—Flower lengthened the head and scored with both bowls, Warden adding one but McMillan saved with the shot which was in turn rested by Warden. Wight promoted an opponent’s bowl and Wanganui lay 2Loudon added another. Benefield drove with both bowls, getting kitty writh his second but finished 2 down.—B.—9.

Fourteenth Head- —A full length. Flower drew two, wide, and Warden another which McMillan saved only to see Warden trail for 2. Crawford added two more and Wight just failed with a

strong one, giving away another. Benefield was short with his first. London added one and Benefield failed to save, London thus scoring 6 and putting his team ahead for the first time. —14—9.

Fifteenth Head. —Another long one. Rowling lay but Warden beat him with a toucher. McMillan narrowly missed. Crawford played for position. Wight flicked the pack to his partner’s bowl The skips didn’t alter. —10—14.

Sixteenth Head. —A shorter one. Rowling got close. Warden shifted the jack leaving St. John’s two up. Crawford saved one. The other failed to improve the position. —11—14. Seventeenth Head. —Flower this time was on the jack. Benefield was the next to alter the score, playing a perfect shot for 3. London altered the head with a drive but was still 3 down and Benefield added another. Lonon saved the position by promoting a short bowl and scored one.—l5 —11.

Eighteenth Head. —The rain had now stopped but the green was dead. Rowling just beat a good one by Flower Wanganui lay 3 good seconds but Wight drew another shot and Crawford and London failed to alter it and Benefield got one of his bowls amongst the scorers.—London 15; Benefield 14, Nineteenth Head. —Another tussle between the leads saw Flower score two in spite of a toucher by Rowling. McMillan played a good shot and made his rink 2 up, but Warden removed one. Crawford, with a good shot rested an opponent’s bowl for 3. Benefield was wide with his first. London played a block and Benefield saved one with his

last bowl. —London 17; Benefield 14. Twentieth Head.—Rowling’s two bowls scored, one a toucher on kitty. Warden drew second but McMillan put in another with his first bowl. Crawford excelled by drawing on the jack and got good position with his second Wight just grazed past the jack and Benefield’s drive and running shots narrowly missed, the position being bad for him.—London 18; Benefield 14. Twenty-first Head.—Both leads failed, Flower in the better position. McMillan drew dead on Kitty, but Crawford, at the top of his form, displaced with his first and put in another with his second. Wight’s two drives missed. London drew the kitty for one only but a better position. Benefield had two drives but could not improve, the game thus ending.—London 19; Benefield 14. Mr T. H. Battle, Centre president, presented the orders for trophies to the winners and runners-up, the skips responding.

VISIT TO WAVEBLEY, The Wanganui Bowling Club journeyed to Waverley yesterday to pay their annual visit to the Waverley Club. Morning and afternoon games were played but owing to rain the morning games were not completed. Following are the results, the Wanganui rinks being mentioned first: — Morning Games.
