IN PRISON FOR DEBT
CHINAMAN’S STRANGE FATE Life imprisonment for a debt seems to be the queer fate of a young Chinese journalist who calls himself Paul Wise. He has been in prison at Victoria, British Coluipbia, since June, 1927. and for all he knows, will stay there till he dies. He was sued by Ping Lee, a fel-low-countryman, for a debt of about £750, and as he denies all responsibility and refuses to pay, he is kept under lock and key.
As plaintiff, Ping Lee, has to pay for the prisoner’s maintenance, and regularly every Monday he has called to pay seven dollars, equal to nearly 30s. It is supposed that some political vendetta is the real explanation of Paul Wise’s unlucky fate, but this he denies. “It is nothing but spite, ” he says.
