PROTECTING BELL-BIRDS

NUMBER AT MOTUIHI “It is not generally known that there arc bellbirds on Motuihi Island, but now that it is to be open tu the public the fact may as well be known and visitors ajipealed to to preserve this rare and beautiful song bird,” said Mr A. T. Pycroft at a meeting of the executive of the Auckland Institute and Museum during thc week. He added the Mayor was taking all possible steps to prevent thc birds being disturbed and molested. The boll-bird was protected under lhe Birds Protection Act, but an appeal to the public would probably’ not be amiss. Air Pycroft said the bellbird, mentioned since the time of Captain Cook, was now found only' at one place on the mainland of thc North Island, and on a few outlying islands. It had been suggested efforts should be made to habilitate the species in the Waipoua Forest, and at other points on the northern mainland, in the hope that it would once again become plentiful.
