England’s Oldest Alderman
In Mr James Guppy', Bridport, thc <IJ Dorset town, claims that it pos.■•essrs England’s oldest alderman. Mr Gujipy, who is ninety-eight years old, oigs in. his allotment, attends meetings, and buys his groceries from tin 1 ‘hop which he founded sixty-iive years ago. He has been a member of the council for forty-eight years, and has missed only a few meetings
In 1563 Mr Guppy’ began to build up a business. He retired in 1901, leaving the business to his two sons. Five years ago one of th e sons died ot sleepy sickness. On the night of his funeral his brother died suddenly, and Mr Guppy had to allow his business to be formed into a company.
