“Alfred the King”
A party of Boy Scouts has recently’ been making a tour of places associated with King Alfred. Among the places was Winchester, which was the scene of much of King Alfred’s life —th ( . place where he settled and where he died and lies buried.
The scouts were received at Winchester by th e director of education for the city. During their visit the boys laid a laurel wreath, tied with black and white ribbons, at the foot of thc statue of King Alfred, which was erected in .1901, on the thousandth anniversary of the King’s i’.eath. The wreath bore the inscription, “Alfred the King, from the latest of his followers.”
