Saving an Industry
New hope for the weaving industry in Lancashire is based on the immediate introduction ».f the automatic loom, the invention of an Englishman, Mr S. Jackson. Hitherto its use has been hst rifted’ to the United States.
Thc iTincip’.e of the automatic loom is somewha, similar to that of the rille magazine, the cartridges in this ease being shuttles containing bobbins, which are lifted automatically into what may be regarded as th'e brecche of the loom as thc preceding bobbin and shuttle are ejected on exhaustion. The operation of weaving is thus made continuous, and the con-
sequent saving of labour is such that one weaver can attend to from twenty’ to forty looms compared with four, thc usual number looked after by one weaver in Lancashire
