A Six-Ton Shark Caught
There were exciting moments on a German trawler, off Iceland, lately, when a shark, 32ft. long and weighing nearly six tons was landed in the fishing nets. It is reported to be the largest basking .shark ever caught on the European side of the Atlantic, the previous record being a specimen 28ft. long.
The trawler took the monster to Aberdeen, and the skipper. Captain Goepel, described how, when the nets were, hauled in, the shark was threshing about violently. The danger from the lashing tail made getting the shark aboard a long and hazardous taskWhen it was got on deck, a wire hawser was taken from blocks on the mast and another from the winch and loops were thrown round each end of the net, and the shark was wedged firmly against the dock rails. Cutting portions of the net, the mate drew a knife down the shark’s body, but it was still giving convulsive movements 10 hours later.
