GENERAL NEWS The monthly meeting of the Taihape Volunteer Fire Brigade was held on Wednesday, when business of a general nature was transacted. Captain 8. F. Reid presided over a good attendance. A meeting of the Otaihape troop of the Legion of Frontiersmen was also held on Wednesday evening, when matters of interest to the Legion were dealt with. Pupils of the Taihape District High School sat for their proficiency examination yesterday. Taihape’s first motion picture entitled “Thelma of Taihape,” in which Miss Jean Currie, Mr S. Peyton, junr. and Mr A. Millar, play the leading roles, was screened at the Town Hall last evening. The hall was packed, and many were unable to gain admission. The picture was greatly appreciated by the large audience, and those who have not yet seen it should not miss the opportunity of doing so. “Thelma of Taihape” will be shown again at the Town Hall to-night, and also at a special matinee on Saturday afternoon. A team of bowlers from the Ohakuue Club visited Taihape yesterday to compete for the Rangitikei Shield. Mrs L. Joll, who is lea'vNg Taihape shortly, was farewelled at a social gathering held in the Presbyterian Hall last evening. Farmers are taking full advantage of the fine weather to get their shearing done and each day large lorry loads of wool are being carted to the railway station. A special meeting of parishioners of the Church of England -was held in the Parish Hall last evening to discuss matters concerning the church school. TENNIS NOTES Matches played in the second round of the ladies’ handicap singles have resulted as follows: Miss R. Wapp (5 behind (scr.) defeated M. E. Johnson (5 behind scr.’;, 60 —38; Miss M. Couper (20) defeated Miss M. Johnson (14), 60—46; Miss L. O’Callaghan won from Miss E. McCormick by default. The only match not yet played is between Miss M. Sexton (14) and Miss D. Howcns (20). In the second round of the men’s handicap singles J. Young (scr) defeated F. Leahy (12), 60—51; J. Bradley (2) defeated J. Mortland (18' 1 60—50; F. Darvill (2) defeated J. Murphy (2), 60—52. The remaining match to be played is between F. Sexton (22) and E. Duncan (30). TOWN HALL, TO-NIGHT The star attraction at the Town Hall this evening is “The Counsel for the Defence,” a screen adaption from the famous Leroy Scott novel recently published under the title of “The Attorney for the Defence.” It has a cast including Betty Compson, House Peters, Rockliffe Fellowes, Emmet King, Jay Hunt, William Conklin, Joan Standing. On the same programme is Taihape’s first movie, “Thelma of Taihape,” featuring Miss Jean Currie and Messrs Stanley Peyton and Alox Millar.
