Sir James Allen has been granted leave of absence for the remainder of the session by the Legislative Council on account of his illness.

The death of Mr Thomas Baker, founder of the firm of Baker and Rouse, with Kodak interests in Australia, is announced. Mr Baker was a leader in philanthropic xvork during the war and was president of the Melbourne Rotary Club.

A London cablegram reports the death of Lady Alexander, wife of Brigadier-General Sir William Alexander, ALP., managing director of Tennant and Co., Glasgow. Lady Alexander was a daughter of Mr hn Ritchie, of Parramatta (N.S.W.).

The Rev. Fathers T. McCarthy (Marist missioner) and C. O’Reilly (cx-Pro-vincial), both of Wellington, who attended the General Chapter of the Alarist Order at Rome, as delegates from New Zealand, arrived at Auckland this week and will return to Wellington next week.

The New South Wales Premier, Mr T. R. Bavin, announces the retirement of Mr O’Malley Wood, president of the Government Savings Bank, also Mr J. Da ies, third. commissioner of the bank. Mr JI. D. Hall has been appointed president, and the two vacant commissionerships will be filled by the appointment of Mr IL May, chief inspector of the bank, and Mr A. Turner, secretary.

Reference to the toss suffered by the Methodist Church in the death of Air W. G. Bassett was made by Air W. Hutchens prior to the presentation of the oratorio, “Hymn of Praise,” at Trinity Church last evening. Air Bassett, he said, had been connected with Methodism in Wanganui practically as long as there had been a church here. As a tribute to the late Air Bassett the audience observed a few moments’ silence.
