HARD TO PRONOUNCE

COUNCIL AND NEW ROADS The names of ocean liners are not favoured by the Barnet Rural District Council as names for streets on the new Furz Hill estate, in England. The estate which is part of Boreham Wood, is owned by the Atlantic Assurance Company Ltd, whose suggestions for names of some of the streets to be laid out were Audania, Franconia, Brescia, Laconia, Caronia and Valacia. When the plans came before the council for approval recently there were immediate protests. Objection was taken to “Greek and Latin origins,” and councillors thought the names would be too difficult for people to pronounce. Approval of the plans -was deferred for technical reasons and the clerk was instructed to invite the company to reconsider its suggestion in the meantime.
