TOWN BOARD MEETING. (Special "Cl roniclu” Service.) ’The monthly meeting of tin* Bulls Town Board was held on Alondtiy e\citing. Commissioner J. Walker piesided, and there vvre also [•resent: Commissioners F. Holland, IL Stevens, J. Flvtiii, C. Broughton, J. Robins and the Town Clerk. Leave of absence was granted to Cmr. Edhouse. Foreman Howard’s report detailed work done during the month, viz., road grading, cleaning of lootpaths, assisting in formation of concrete path in Criterion Street, painting of “poached eggs.” etc. '.rhe foreman was instructed to rut the grass at the children’s playground, ami to supply sand where needed. Correspondence.— From ihe Alanawatu and West Coast Auctioneers’ Association. enclosing cheque for license fee of saleyards. —Received. From the secretary of the District Highways’ Board. Stratford, advising that from April 1 next, all expenditure on road maintenance and on new bridges will be subsidised on the basis of £2 for £l. —Received. From the Engineer-in-Chief, Public Works Department, Wellington, re heavy trallic. regulations. — Received. Health Report.—Air J. W. Huggins. District Public Health Officer, reported that no infectious diseases had been reported during the month. The following sanitary inspections had been made: Habitations 9, food-sellers’ premises 2, plumbing and drain-age 3. “In conjunction with Dr Shore,’’ the report added, “an inspection of the river re water supply has been made, and you will receive Dr. Shore’s report in due course.” Air Huggins tendered suggestions regarding plumbing, the Board’s by-laws on the subject being out-of-date. — It was resolved to take steps to bo gazetted under the Drainage and Plumbing Regulations, as suggested. Librarv. —A Long discussion took place regarding the obsolete books which were crowding the library, ami means of relieving the congestion. It was agreed that. Ihe library not being a paving concern, ami funds not being available for additions, ratepayers could not be asked to sanction a Joan for building purposes, ami the Library Committee was instructed to go through the books, and to dispose of those which were useless. A suggestion was made that a meeting of subscribers be called to elect one of their number to assist the Library Committee in the selection of new books. Overhanging Fences. —Cmr. Walker drew attention to the number of frees, hedges and fences which are overhanging footpaths, and the foreman will be instructed to attend to these matters. Finance. —Subject to payments made on Monday evening, credit balances were shown as follows: District Fund, £3ll 2s lid; Cemetery, £2B 4s sd; Library, £l4 ss; Accounts passed for payment totalled: district Fund, £l2l C»s 2d; Cemetery. £1 IDs; Library, £J 7s. ('(•liedions for the month totalled £74 10s lid, and were made up as fidlows: Rates, £6 5s 9d; Town Hall rents, £36 ss; Heavy Traffic Licenses, £27 2s 2d; Library, £4 ISs. Alceting Night.—Monday, often being sale day, was found to be an inconvenient night for meetings, and m future the Board will n ect on the second Thursday in each month. The Works Comimttec for the ensuing month will comprise Cmrs. Robins, Stevens and Broughton. The members hen sat as a Domain Board. The Domain account showed a credit balance of £3 14s 7<l. An account for £1 IL 6d was passed fur payment. The question of farming the Recreation Grounds was deferred for three mon t hs. LODGE RANGITIKEI, No. 14. The regular fortnightly meeting of the above Lodge was held on Diur.-day evening. N.G. Bro. Bromley presided. Three new members were proposed. I’.G. Bro. Alansell installed Bro. Averv into the Recording Secretary’s chair. Il wtus resolved to accept a challenge from Kopanc Lodge for a return euchre match ,to be played in the Lodge Room, Bulls, on Thursday, November 22. Ti e Sisters of Kosencath Rebekah Lodge were invited t , be present at the games. P.G.’s Bros. J. Fahey ami J. J. Mansell were nominated for officers of the Grand Lodge representatives. Christ ma.s Tree. —All members who can make it convenient are requested to meet at the Lodge Room on Tuesday evening for the purpose of fori ing roinmil tees to arrange for the Christmas Trei’, etc. It was resolved to support the Star of Avondale Lodge with their Art Union. RANGITIKEI RACING CLUB. The committee of the Rangitikei Racing Club met on Momlay evening, when [lie programme for this season’s race meeting was drawn up. Stake-money was increased by £35, and trophies donated will bring the total value of Ihe increase to £1 15. Air J. AlcKelvie. president of the club, has donated a I cup valued £BO for the winner of the (Rangitikei Cup. and Aliss Scott is presenting [dale to the value of £3O to II he winner of the Scott Alemorial HanATTEMPTED BURGLARY. Another attempt, was made on Saturday night to enter the premises of Messrs Ba.ll Bros., hairdressers and tobacconists, situated in .Mansell’s Buildings, but on this occasion the visitor failed to gain entrance, though, as before, a pane of glass in the door at the rear of the shop was broken, and an attempt made to reach the lock. Since the former burglary a stout wire protect ion has been attached to the windows in the door, and this the would-be burglar failed to oxercome. The police are making inquiries. COMMUNITY CHEST. Last week the members of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union conducted competition in order io raise funds for the community chest, and as the result of their efforts, over £9 was nettl'd. ’The prize-winners were: Cak<‘. Air F. Hart; chocolates. Mr C. Edwards. A POPULAR WIN. A good number of local people were interested in the races held at Levin

on Saturday, and the success of the Bulls-owneif gelding, Elysianor, brought a lot uf money to the township. I,.iysianor was acquired by Air \ . Edhouse a short while ago, and this is the first win registered in the new owner’s col ours. Mr Edhouse made no secret ot. his confidence in winning, and the victory was in consequence, a popular on.e. DANCE RECITAL. On Friday evening Aliss Shnpleski’s pupils gave a dance recital in the Town Hall, and assistance was rendered by the Feilding Pipe Band. There was a satisfactory attendance, and the show wa s a bright and entertaining one. Hcvera.l local children, pupils of Aliss Shapleski, took part, and the performance was a credit to both tutor and pupils. THE PICTURES Richard Barthelmess makes a comeback in “The Patent Lea'her Kill.” The picture is groat entertainment. It is well made, story splendidly developed and its telling is absorbingly human. A happy ending that is beautifully done without the csual maudin sentiment. There are comedy and grimness and thrills. You’ll get a kick out of this one. It’s worth, seeing. “'J’he Patent Leather Kid” will be screened at Bulls this evening.
