PURCHASE OF TRAMS ARRANGEMENTS CONFIRMED. The City Council met last evening, the Mayor, Air W .J. Rogers, presiding. There were also present: Crs. W. AL Luxford, J. Biddells, J. Calver, C. H. Burnett, C. W. Poynter, W. AL Fal- ! coiner, H. G. Horsley, S. E. Read, J. IT. Werry, A. H. Halligan and John I Morrison. J The Tramways Committee report was las follows: “Takapuna Cars. —The committee has confirmed the arrar o emcnt made by the chairman for the purchase of two tramcars, together with two additional under carriages, including all brake gear, for the sum of £650, f.o.r. Auckland. “Application for shelter shed, Toi and Totara Streets. —The committee has deferred consideration of this request in the meantime. “Passes for subnormal children attending snecial classes. —The committee cannot recommend the granting of free passes, as it is of the opinion that the matter is one for the Education l/epartment or local boards to be responsible for.” The report was adopted. City Valuations. The city valuer report, which was received, wag as follows: “I em now just on completion of Na. 8 Book in the City, which completes 800 of the most congested and difficult portion of the whole city. “Starting at Murray’s foundry, I have done Somme Parade up to Ingestre Street, then a direct line through to Purnell Street, n>. tr racecourse. Inside the above area I hope to complete by Wednesday next. “I will then have completed 3100 valuations, each one having been inspected and carefully measured up. This method I propose to adopt for completion of the whole rateable area of the city. “To do this 1 estimate that at least yne month’s extra time will be required to complete the valuations under the present system.” An application for the free use of the Opera House, or a substantial reduction in the rent, was made by the Queen Alexandra Band in respect of a concert to be given on December 7 and relayed to Wellington for broadcasting. A protest was received from the Wanganui Beautifying Society in regard to the use of a car by the City Gardener, Air W. Tucker, being discontinued. It was pointed out that the Council’s decision was given effect to on the score of economy in the matter of transport. It was decided to defer the matter for consideration at the end of the financial year. The question of the transport of the officers of the department wa s also referred to the end of the year.
