CHARGE OF THEFT

ISSUE OF VALUELESS CHEQUE i ACCUSED MAKES ADMISSION At the Magistrate's C\f;rt yesterday afternoon before Air J. H. Keesing, J.P., and Air \V. H. Alacey, J.P., Henry William AlcKay, abas Gordon Sinclair Fletcher, appeared on a charge of theft and issuing a vaueless cheque. Airs Raines, said that on October 20. she was away 1' om her home from half past ten, and that when she returned she discovered that a Kruger sovereign was missing and that a child’s money-box containing 6s had been forced open. Phillip England said he played golf on October 20. Next morning he noticed that his cheque book and some money had disappeared. Charles Cain said that on October 22, accused came into his billiard saloon and said ho was an Australian boxer- Witness cashed a cheque for him without noticing that it was not dated. Detective Walsh, said that accused informed him that prior to October 20, he was in Wanganui for three weeks and that he had entered Airs Raines’ house and also Air England’s and that in each case it was through an open door. He admitted that ho had issued a valueless cheque and that he was responsible for the thefts. The sovereign had been recovered at Hastings. Accused was committed- for trial at the Wanganui Supremo Court.
