NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL MEEETING HELD REPORT DISCLOSES PROGRESS The annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic, Association was held on Monday, the president. Air. R. W. AlcA’illy, presiding. Moving lhe adoption of Ilie report and balance-sheet, Air AleVilly commented on the progress made throughout the Dominion during the year, remarking that anything the association could do to assist primary and secondary school sports was in the interests of amateur athletics generally. There were now 117 clubs affiliated to the association. Ho congratulated the Otago and Canterbury Centres on the progress they had made, a number of new clubs having been formed in those districts. He hoped that every endeavour would be made to secure a visit of athletes from the Homeland next, season. The value of such visits could not be overemphasised. New Zealand was a sporting country, and liked to sec the best of her manhood competing against the best from overseas. If it was not possible to arrange a tour by athletes from England next year, then every endeavour should be made to secure visit from a Canadian team. Olympic Representatives Reference was also made by Air MeVilly to the Olympic team. New Zealand ’s representatives, in his opinion, had well and worthily represented the Dominion. He congratulated the. team as a whole on their successes. Ilis one regret was that it had not been possible to send an eight-oared crew to the Games; their chance, no doubt, would come next time. The future of the association, Air AleVilly added, was very bright. He could look back to the time when the sport was a dead letter in Wellington. Great strides had been made, and everyone had occasion to be well proud of tlie present state of affairs. Those interested in amateur athletics, however, could not afford io rest on their oars. And, what was more, he was sure they would not. Financially, the association was in a good position. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. .11 was decided that in order to pro vide suflicient funds to assure representation at the Olympic Games the council, out of its general funds, set. .aside £29 each year and each centre forward 1o the council a sum not exceeding £l9 per annum in accordance with its financial position.
