NORTH WELLINGTON BRANCH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OPENS The annual conference of the North Wellington District Branch of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers opened at Wanganui yesterday afternoon in the City Council Chambers. Mr N. C. Stavelcy presided. In welcoming the visitors, the Mayor Mr W. J. Rogers, referred txj the value of such conferences as the present one, where, by associating and exchanging ideas, the members derived considerable advantage and assistance in their work. With regand to the civil engineering profession, civilisation owed a tremendous debt to it, down through the ages. He could say wth justifiable pride that the en gineering problems of Wanganui had always been in capable hands and he thought that the local works which the members wou'd inspect during their visit, would be viewed with pleasure and satisfaction. Reference was made to the loss of an old and valued member of the branch, in the death of Mr G. Hickford. of »Sandon. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to the family of the late Mr Hickford. It was resolved that the Taranaki branch of the Society be written to with a view to incorporating it in the North Wellington branch. It was arranged to hold the next meeting at Palmerston North in September, 1929. The election of officers resulted: Chairman, Mr S. A. R. Mair; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. R. Menzies; committee. Messrs A. H. M. Wright, A. R. Blackwood and W. Bell.
