EXPENSIVE MAINTENANCE
Main road maintenance inn New land is costing an average of £ll9 18<
a mile annually. This is more thaw double the expenditure obtaining bo fore the Afain Highways Board came into existence. The standard of main* tenance can hardly be said to have increased in direct proportion to the expenditure per mile, as the number of vehicles has increased about 70 per cent., with consequent increase in road usage and danger. Maintenance ftost.il must rise as the number of transport units increases, but the assistance which local bodies have received from the Highways Board has mAde it possible to keep ahead of the increANp in traffic, and generally improve conditions. Recently it has been found that where the traffic density is greatest, an outlay of oven £3OO or £4OO a mile on a macadam road does not maintain a satisfactory surface.
