ON RICCARTON TRACKS YESTERDAY MORNING

INTERESTING WORK FOR FINAL GALLOPS

(Special “Chronicle” Service.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 1. This morning broke cold and cheerless with more than a suggestion of rain from the south. A rising barometer proved a reliable indicator, however, and after breakfast there was a little sunshine and . more congenial temperature. There was a good deal of interesting work at Riccarton, all of which was done on the extreme outside of tho course proper. Ag the track was soft and the horses actually covered /a good deal more ground than the distances named, some of the times recorded were better than they really appeared to be. The gallops did not cause very great fluctuation of the hopes of interested parties, but Bright Glow gained plenty of friends for the Stewards’ Handicap by her smart six-furlong gallop. Of the Cup horses Pink Note, Ba-pier and Hoylake did best. Nothing went more freely than Pink Note this morning. He was always bowling along in front and if it could be assumed with certainty that he would see out the two miles he would take a good deal of beating. Even though Pink Note should fail in the Cup he should certainly win a race at the meeting. Count Cavour’s Chances. Count Cavour appears to have lost a good deal of his dash and his effort was very disappointing. He may give the lie to his track work on race day but against that his recent public form has been poor. The Count has to be discarded as a Cup proposition. Rapier is going t 0 be a hard horse to head now for all his 9.0. Any track conditions do not come amiss to him and he is in rare fettle. He carried a very light-weight this morning but came away in the straight in impressive style. It is quite on the cards that he will be a Cup winner in successive years.

Beacon Light is improving with each gallop on the track. Conditions are all in his favour. That he is forward enough to win a Cup is doubtful, but a race later in the meeting may certainly come his way.

Rotor looks well and is working well but Pink Note appears to hold him. Rotor is an improved horse who should score in middle distance handicaps. Oratrix continues to do solid pace work and her gallop over a mile this morning was good in that it was smoothly done.

Her trainer is confident she will see out every yard of the two miles and it is in her favour that she i s a very good winded mare. She has now freshened up well after her Sydney trip and in condition is O.K.

Hoylake had A. E. Ellis up and he galloped a solid seven furlongs. He had an indifferent mate and so not a good deal could be learned from the gallop, except that it compared favourably from a time point of view. T. Lloyd rates Hoylake very highly and he should know what is required of a Cup horse. The grey is very wall and promises to run a great race. Set Sail had Solrose as a mate over a mile but the Cup candidate came away from her companion at the top and finished on well. A mile further might see a difference. Set Sail’s stable-mate, Lucy Locket, ran a rather better mile and finished just as well. Lucy Locket is an unknown quantity at the distance but she might spring a surprise. She is in great order. Some Sprinters that Pleased. Of the sprinters from a time point of view nothing went bettc than Silvermine aud Arrow Lad, and there was nothing between the pair at he end of their half-mile sprint. Against that Childsplay, alone and very early, went nearly as fast and her’s, too, was a convincing bright show. At equal weights she was, as could be expected, too good for Consent and she is back to her best form. Silver Paper and Cimabue both worked very easily and Cimabue, who looks very well, really loafed over his fivefurlong task. Booster was set an easy task, sprinting down the straight. While he may be out of a place in the Stewards’ Handicap, one of the seven-fuulong races later in the meeting should see him at his best. Chelone was not worked as he has a slightly injured hock, and is to gallop to-morrow. Royal Saxon went a useful five furlongs but no doubt ho could have improved upon it. The work suggested that the form horses, Cimabue and Bright Glow, will be very hard to beat. Royal Saxon is a possible outsider. The Gallops in Detail. Mandane was accompanied on her 10furlong gallop by Laughing Prince and Shining Armour. Though Laughing Prince tested the mare thoroughly Shining Armour was of no use to his companions at any stage and he was beaten off by the time the half-mile post was reached. Laughing Prince and Mandane, from a flat-footed start, immediately drew out r rom Shining Armour. Turning into the straight there was little between the pair, but over the last furlong Mandane drew out slightly and she was two lengths clear of her companion when the post was reached in 2.13 2-5.

The Stewards’ Handicap candidate, Paperchase, wa.; responsible for a disappointing effort when she got to the end of six furlongs in the time of 1.19 3-5. The Paper Money mare went only fairly throughout. (’hi.idsplay showed plenty of speed in a four furlong sprint which .she tra versed in 49 4-5. She wus going weli at the end, too, so apparently the seven furlong gallop she had on Tuesday has improved her. The two-year-olds Honour and Jaleux got to the end of four furlongs in 52, but were not extended. Commendation galloped home from the seven-furlong post in 1.32 4-5 and was going well at the end. Historic’s last six furlongs of his mile contract, run in 1.19 3-5, formed

a particularly goud effort and t. indications are that he will have a big following in his Riccarton engagements. The Nassau gelding is improving all the time and he might develop into a good performer ox er a journey this season. Smart Juvenile Performer Speed Light, ..inner of the Wanganui Debutante Stakes and the Wellesley Stakes, was going particularly well at the end of half a mile in 50. She strode out vary freely and is so well that she is bound to offer a stout resistance to her rivals in the Welcome Stakes. Goblin Market was hard held throughout his mile gallop which occupied 1.50. Over the same distance Footfall got through a strong working gallop. Prickles and Swoopalong hopped off at the mile and a-quarter barrier but on reaching the half-mile post, where Prickles joined forces with Impertinence, Swoopalong dropped out. Impertinence led Pridkles by two lengths into the straight and she was in front of the Oaks candidate at the finish. Prickles carried a fairly big weight but she was not ridden out. She ran the last mile in 1.49 4-5 and the full distance in 2.18. Roscrca impressed the spectators with his seven furlong gallop in 1.32. The Derby candidate was picked up by Toawai at the five furlongs but Roscrea proved too good for his rival and he was four lengths clear when the deciding line was reached. Denier was going better than Noteworthy at the end of six furlongs, the last half-mile taking 54. Golden Armour, who is likely to carry heavy support in the Stewards’ Handicap, was hard held during her halfmile sprint, which took 53. The Leighton filly has not raced for some time but she looks remarkably fit and she will not lack in condition in her approaching engagements. Admirers of Arrow Lad must have had a shock when they saw their »Stcwards’ Handicap fancy beaten in a halfmile gallop by Silvermine, but as the time for that journey—49 3-5 sec—was the b’Q?t of the morning and he was beaten by only a narrow margin there was no disgrace in Arrow Lad’s defeat. Sunny Pal and Cuunt Palatine sprinted three furlongs and there was little between them at the end. Push and ImarosebuJ were associated in a half-mile sprint which took 57, but they were not extended by any means.

One of the best efforts of the morning over seven furlongs was credited to First Sight, who travelled that distance in 1.31 4-5. It was an excellent gallop, especially as he appeared to be doing his work comfortably at the end. The Gay Lad gelding will be a runner in the Riccarton Handicap on Saturday and he should show to advantage in the nine-furlong event.

A Smart Chief Bser. Admiral Drake led Gold Tinge and Cossack Chief by half a length at the end of four furlongs, run in 50 4-5.. Admiral Drake went nicely throughout and gained many friends for his Welcome Stakes engagement, but Gold Tinge could have improved upon his 'effort.

Stately slipped over half a mile in 49 4-5 and moved wall all the way. Sir Roy and Nightmarch hopped off from the seven furlong post and ran home in 1.32 3-p. Byth galloped impressively and finished full of running. Cashier strode out freely over seven furlongs and over the same distance, Hoylake led Bolero by two lengths in 1.32 3-5. The imported horse strode out very freely and has never been so well as ho is now. He must have a wonderful chance in the Cup and all the indications are that he will put up the race of hig career.

Silver Paper was given an easy six furlongs. His stock as a Stewards’ candidate has depreciated a little for some reason.

Silver Rule led Royal Saxon at the end of five furlongs in 1.4. Royal Saxon galloped very freely and he might have an outside chance in the Stewards’ Handicap. As a result of his frequent racing through the winter months his condition must be very solid.

Cimabue was not all out to get to the end of five furlongs in 1.5. He looks very well and is sure to run prominently at the meeting. Some Lad, Honeycomb and Amor hopped off at the. six-furlong post but after going two furlongs Amor dropped back. Some Lad led Honeycomb a furlong from the post but Honeycomb sprinted fast over the last bit and was threequarters of a length- clear of his companion at the end, with Amor six lengths away. The time—l.lB 4-5 — was good. Trio of Gup Candidates Pipk Note, Rotor and Couat Cavour, from a flat-footed start, hopped away from the 10-furlong post and for the first six furlongs raced close together, but once they hit the home stretch Pink Noto was always going better than Rotor and he. beat his Cup rival home by three-quarters of a length. Count Cavour was beaten off. The time for the 10 furlongs was f 13 3-5. Decoy Bird ran home from the halfmile post in 55. For the last four of six furlongs Front Rank and Mendip registered 54. Battle Colours, Rapier and Beacon Light began smartly from the mile and a-quarter starting post but Beacon Light soon took up the running. The Boniforni gelding led down the back and around the far turn but both Rapier and Battle Colours had his measure by the time the straight was reached. Battle Colours aad Rapier were together 100 yards from the post but when given a couple of strokes with the stick Rapier spurted right away from Battle Colours and at the end held a clear advantage. Beacon Light was several lengths back. The time—2.l4—was good. Concentrate and the Cup favourite, Oratrix, were compa ions in a nine-fur-long gallop which occupied 2.2 2-5. Both travelled freely throughout but Oratrix was going very easily at the end. After breakfast Camisader beat Pha star over four furlongs in 53. Set Sail and Sol rose hopped off from the mile post and after running the first four furlongs in 51 3-5 got to the end of eight furlongs in 1.47 3-5. Booster sprinted three furlongs up the straight. Lucy Locket showed to great, advantage in a mile gallop which she did in

1.46 3-5. ‘ She was accompanied by Apple Dighton but she was J9O yards in advance of the latter at the end. It was a smart effort. Stealth was 4 hree-quarters of a length iu advance of Francolin at the end of four furlongs run in smart time. Mime was gvicn a working gallop over six furlongs. Over a mile Beau Geste and Troikas registered 1. 51. The Best MuC Gallop. Gay Sonnet recorded the best mile gallop of the morning when she got to the end of that distance in 1.45 1-5. Rigmarole sprinted six furlongs in 1.20 3-5. Waterlow and Page Boy got through strong work. Diana’s Lad was too good foi Kulrange at the end of a mile which took 1.51 2-5. Smithereens and Rascal ran five furlongs in 1.6. Buoyant galloped six furlongs in 1.13 and was going wcl.l at the end. Bon Rose and Thurso sprinted seven furlongs in 1.35 1-5. Malmsey and Shipshape recorded 1.35 for seven furlongs. Bonatic (W. Scobip) cleared the hur dies in good style. Ned Kelly and Nine of Spades school ed over four hurdles, giving a fair ex hibition. Red Heckle went an easy six fur longs in 1.25 2-5» Over seven funongs Star Raid de feated Moratorium, the timjp. being 1.34 4-5. The following horses arrived at Ric carton to-day from Wellington: Kil bronsyth, Kilperon. Pass Book, Nuku inai, Beaumont, Black Mint, Royal Game, Moorgas, Pangolin, Desert Lad. Crown Area, Partaga, Benzora, Here moana, Nucleus and Vigilance. SPRING RACING NOVEMBER FIXTURES AT FEILDING AND OTAKI NOMINATIONS DUE TO-NIGHT With the exception of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting, which virtually opens the campaign on the west coast of the North Island, none of the fixtures set down for decision attracts more attention from owners and trainers than does the Feilding gathering, due to be held this year on November 30 and December 1. The class of the fields that is usually in evidence at this fixture is superior to most of the others on the circuit, and perhaps to this fact is due the popularity of the gathering. It is usually the case that the Feilding Cup and the Feilding Stakes, both run on the opening day, attract some of the best handicap performers in commission. This year the stake attached to the big race will be £5OO, including a silver cup valued at £25, whereas twelve months ago the stake was £4OO and no trophy. The Feilding Stakes carries stakemoney of £5OO also, but entries for this closed some time back.

The open sprint, the Flying Handicap, is worth £250, while the other open event, the Kiivitea Handicap, is run over a mile and a-distance for a stake of £2OO. Last year the hurdle race was an open event, but this year the stake has been reduced to £l5O and the distance to a mile and a-half for a hack event. A similar procedure has been adopted for the hurdle race on the second day of the meeting. The Kowhai Hack Handicap will be run over a mile and a-distance for £175, which is an increase of £25 on last year’s event, which was over seven furlongs. On the second day the Oroua Nursery Handicap will carry a stake of £175, which is £25 less than was the case twelve months ago. Otherwise the programme is substantially the same and should attract a good response from owners and trainers. Nominations for all events close with the secretary, M. E. G. Goodbehere, at 8.30 p.m. to-day, at which time first forfeits are also due for the Twentythird Feilding Stakes. Handicaps for the first day events are due on Monday, November 19, and acceptances arc due at 8.30 p.m. on Friday, November 23. Otaki Spring Meeting. The Otaki Maori Racing Club will hold their spring meeting on Wednesday and Thursday, November 21 and 22, and the programme is one that merits consideration. Nominations will close at 8 o’clock to-night and weights for all first-day events are due to make their appearance on Monday, November 12, while acceptances will close on Thursday, November 15, at 8 p.m. In Auckland Province Nominations .for the Takapuna spring fixture, to be held on November 30 and December 1, close at 5 p.m. today, when final payment for the Takapuna Plato is also due. Entries for the Te Kuiti meeting on November 24 and 26 close to-day at 5 p.m., with Messrs Bloinfield and Co., Auckland, and at 9 p.m. at the club’s office at Te Kuiti.
