FIRE AT WAITAKI

EXTENSIVE DAMAGE (Per Press Association.) OAMARU, Oct. 11. The biggest fire for nearly ten years occurred at 4.30 this morning at Waitaki. The buildings were two stores in Thames Street, owned by Mr W. Aicltenhood, draper. The damage is estimated at about £BOOO. Mr Aickenhood’s shop was gutted the stock is a total loss. Mr H. Grenfell’s mercery stock was badly damaged by water. Mr J. Martyn’s cycle and sporting e stock was damaged by water. Mr L. Frame, hairdresser’s stock and fittings were destroyed. Misses Cartwright, three pianos, furniture and music, were destroyed. The stock, furniture and fittings of Mr S. J. Gunning (tailor), Mrs Gibson (dressmaker), and Mr W. Brown (commission agent) arc a total loss. The fire is believed to have started at the rear of the building. The heavy winds made a hard fight for the brigade. Mr Aickenhood’s shop and upstairs portion were gutted. The insurances are: Mr Aickcnhood £4OOO on the building in the National, and £3200 on the stock in the New Zealand Standard. He will be a heavy loser. Mr Grenfell £l5OO on stock in the Sun, New Zealand :.nd South British; Mr Martyn £575 on the stock and plant; Misses Cartwright £245 on furniture in the South British; Mr Frame, £l5O. Mr Brown, Mrs Gibson and Mr Gunning had their fittings insured for about £l5O.
