SWIMMERS’ SPLASH AT GONVILLE TO-DAY

CHAMPIONSHIP BATHS’ OFFICIAL OPENING FILMING OF CEREMONY SHOULD INTEREST ALL There are not many swimming clubs that could have such a fine opportunity for their “opening splash” as has the Gonville Club, which will celebrate the opening of the 1928-29 season to-day. It so happens that the splash coincides with the official function for the opening of the championship baths, the former 25-yard stretch of water having been extended during the “off” season to 33 1-3 yards. This extension has furnished an additional surface area of about one thousand square feet, while at the end a paddling pool in two sections has been provided for the children. This should prove a great boon to the community and to Gonvule in particular, and it may confidently be anticipated chat the 1928-29 season will go down in the history of swimming in Wanganui as r» arking a great revival in the interest shown in the natatorial art.

The official opening of the baths will be undertaken by his Worship the Mayor, Mr W. J. Rogers, at 2.30 p.m., while among other speakers at thje function will be Mr W. A. Veitch, M.P., Mr C. H. Warden, president of the Wanganui Swimming Centre, and Mr A. G. Bignell. patron of the Gonville Swimming Club. What should prove a great attraction for the children on the occasion is the filming of scenes of the opening, including a great “splash” in which, it is expected some 200 children will take part. Of course there will be no charge for admission for the opening ceremony, and there is certain to be a large attendance of enthusiasts to show their appreciation of the efforts of those responsible for the provision of the championship baths md paddling pool.
