WANGANUI CITY COUNCIL WORK OF COMMITTEES. Various methods of detail in the administration of the civic business of Wanganui were dealt with by the City Council at its meeting Jast evening. Committee reports were adopted as follows: —

Municipal Conference, as follows: (1.) ‘That local bodies be given direct representation on hospital boards.’ (2.) ‘That the time has arrived when all charges in respect of hospitals, (over and above the revenue received therefrom) should be borne by the Consolidated Fund so that all sections of the community and not. merely owners of land should contribute to such charges. ’ “Whyman’s claim.—This matter has been referred to the city solicitor who will ascertain the particulars and report to the council.” “Remission of rent”.—The application made on behalf of a tenant for a reduction in the weekly amount payable for rent, has not been agreed to. ]n view of the tenant’s circumstances, however, the committee recommends that the sum of £9 be written off.’* Gas Committee.—“ The committee reports having reviewed the draft programme for the 1929 gas conference at Wanganui, submitted by the engineer, of which it approves; the matter

of the general arrangements for the conference to be left in the hands of the chairman, the Alayor and the engineer.” Reserves Committee. “Amateur Dramatic Society for reduction in rent and charges for use of Opera House for recent performance of ‘High Jinks.’ —The committee cannot see its way to mak any reduction in the charges which are in accordance with the council's schedule, and which provides for special concessions to the society

“Applications for electric light in council's houses. —We recommend that Airs Knowles be informed that the Council has no objection to her installing electric light, at her own cost if she so wishes, and that Mr Henley be advised that the Council cannot see its way to put in electric light. The term to be 21 years with continuous renewals for 21 years; buildings to the value of £7OO to be erected within a period of 2 years from the commencement of the lease.
