KING’S THEEATRE PICTURES. i Special "Chronicle" Service. ] Irene Rich appears to-night at King’s Theatre in “The Desert Woman,”, which is a vivid melodrama of the desert country, portraying the soul conflict of a woman suddenly taken from the gay world of London society to the brutalising contact with a masterful husband who is commandant of a desert outpost. She meets a young soldier, whose life and her own are caught up in a devastating love which well-nigh wrecks both. GOLF NOTES. The following are the best cards returned in the Shergold and A. and B competition last week. A grade. —H. O’Callaghan, 91—18— 73; S Powell, 87—11—76. B grade.—L. X Sheriff, 99—20—79; H. I. Christehson, 105—26—79. The finals of the senior and junior championships were also played and resulted as follows: —

Senior. —R. McClure beat G. McCombie 4 and 3. Junior. —H. Christenson beat E. G. Armstrong 11 and 10. In the semi-final of the welter weight championship T. C. Kincaid beat R. Henrichs 1 up. This leaves T. C. Kincaid and R. Marsh to play for fhe campionship. Tn view of the Seafield Club (Wanganui) paying us a visit this weekend no weekly competition will be played. As soon as the Scafield team is known the home team will be published and it is hoped every player picked will take part. The following is a progress report of club competitions played to date:— Mortland Rose Bowl Bogey.—A challenge trophy to be won by the player winning the most bogey competitions during the season. Inthe event of more than one player having the same number of wins the best scores to count. R. Marsh is leading with a card of 2 up. Other cards are as follows:—H. M. Hay 1 up, R. Henrichs 1 down, J. A. Arthur 1 down, R. McClure 3 down. This is a combined competition for seniors and juniors.

Shergold Cup.—To be won by the player returning the four best cards in medal competitions during the season. Nett scores to count. The following are the best scores to hand in the A grade:— T. V. The annual meeting of the Taihape Bowling Club was held on Monday evening, when the president, Mr F. Read, presided over an attendance consisting of the following:—Messrs W. Burton, J. Mortland, R. J. Bowie, C. Cherry, W. McKnight, H. Christensen, D. Neagle, E. Loader, J. P. Aldridge, H. O’Callaghan, C. L. Dymock, H. I. Bond, C. Schauer, W. Lavin, Rev. E. Bandy and the secretary (Mr G. C. Armstrong). The annual report, which disclosed a most successful season, and the balance-sheet, were read and adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —Patron, Air J. P. Aldridge; president, Mr H. O’Cailaghau vice-resident, Mr H. D. Bond;; hon. secretary, Mr G. C. Armstrong; hon. treasurer, Mr J. Mortland; hon. auditor, Mr C. L. Dymock; general committee, Rev. E. Bandy and Alcssrs R. J. Bowie, D. Neagle, F. Reade, A. M. Ryan. Rev. E. Bandy moved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded the president (Mr I-’. Rea , the secretary (Air (i. C. Armstrong), the treasurer (Air J. Mortland), and the members of the match ana general committees for thfeir splendid services to the club. The motion was Wrried by acclamation. In vacating the chair the retiring president (Air F. Read) said that every officer had done his best for the club and he was sure the incoming officers would do the same. In thanking the meeting for his election as president, Air H. O’Callaghan | paid a high tribute to Air F. Read for 1 the manner in which the latter had I carried out his duties, and added that he (the speaker) would endeavour to i emulate the fine example set by his pre--I deejessor. I Air C. Cherry informed the meetj ing that Air W. Grey had announced his intention of donating four fountain pens, to be allotted to whatever competition the committee thought fit. The donor was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, and it was left to the incoming committee to decide upon the competition for which the fountain pens will be given. It was decided that the arrangements with the ladies of the croquet club, for providing afternoon tea, be the same as last year, and high appreciation of the efforts of the ladies in this connection was expressed by several members, after which thje ladies were accorded a vote of thanks for their services. Air C. Cherry suggested the location of an entertainment fund and after some discussion che matter was left in the hands of the incoming committee for consideration. The question of raising funds for the

club by means of a bazaar or a concert was discussed but nothing definite was decided upon. Mr H. Christensen complimented the treasurer (Air J. Alortland) on his work on behalf of the club, and Air Bandy made reference to the services Air H. O’Callaghan had rendered the club during the last few months ’*y looking after the green. PERSONAL. On Monday the Town Clerk, Air C. I. Illingworth, underwent a serious operation at Auckland. The Mayor (Mr J. P. Aldridge) has received advice that the operation was fairly successful. At the annual meeting of the Taihape Bowling Club on Monday evening the secretary was instructed to write to Mr Illingworth, expressing the club’s sympathy with him in his present illness and hopes for his speedy recovery. On the eve of his departure under transfer to Alercer, Air A. A. Smith, of the Taihape railway staff, was presented with a handsome travelling bag. In making the presentation on behalf of the staff, the stationmaster (Air J. A. Arthur) paid a high tribute to Air Smith’s ability and referred to the esteem in which he was held by all members of the staff and the regret caused by his pending departure. Messrs R. J. Bowie and J. Mullins endorsed the sentiments expressed by Air Arthur. In returning thanks, Air Smith expressed regret at severing his connection with the Taihape Railway staff after nearly 4J years’ pleasant association with its members. Air A. L. Berry, district manager of the Public Trust Office, is at present indisposed. GENERAL NEWS. Last Saturday the primary school first fifteen travelled to Ohakune to play a match against that school. After an interesting game the visitors won by 11 points to 3. For Taihape tries were scored by N. Woodhead (2) and W. Lloyd. One try was converted. N. Woodhead played an outstanding game for the winners and Sisson, Blockley, Beiliss, and Casey were also prominent. Messrs W. E. Hird (headmaster), F. Cassidy and S. J. McDonnell and a basket ball team in charge of Miss Long also travelled to Ohakune and were beatpn by the home team by 6 goals to 2. Next Saturday the Old Boys senior football team and the Utiku juniors will travel to Wanganui to challenge for the President’s Rose Bowl and AlcKee Cup repectively.
