AIRPLANES CIRCLE OVER WANGANUI CITY

RESIDENTS ENTHUSIASTIC Soon after 10.30 o’clock yesterday morning crowds of Wanganui residents sought places of vantage , m and about the city to view tne t aeroplanes carrying Squadron Leaner smith and party The “look-out” on St. John’s Hill was packed with cars, and numerous men and women and sciiool children lined the bank gazing to the south, while vantage points un Durie Hill and Bastia Hill ah held complement of plane seekers. When eleven o’clock came and no ’planes had made their appearance, questions began tu be askeu. Where were they? ‘‘Probably had a puncture,” suggested a bright young office junior. But at about 11.30 thc ’planes were seen approaching the city from thc south on the seaward side of the Memorial tower. Within a few minutes they were well in sight and soon were circling over the river. Wh they were well over the town they separated. One set off to fly over Gonville and Springvale, to the delight of the children 01 that district, some of whom were so pleased that they kept on waving until thc aviators must have been in thc neighbourhood of Waverley Young men perched on the ridge of the Courthouse roof became so excited at thc sight of the ’planes that, their antics dislodged one of their number, who saved himself from a serious fall by grabbing a projecting corner of the roof on his slide towards thc concrete below. Later onlookers were amused to sec a lady standing on tip toe on one of the seats in Aloutoa Gardens, waving two square inches of pocket handkerchief, probably in the hope that one of the airmen would turn and smile at her.

After having circled round thc town for some minutes the ’planes assembled in arrow formation over Springvale and flew on their way north, between the sea coast and the Alain North Road. By 11-45 they were mere specks on thc northern horizon.

If a suitable landing place can be found the party will land In Wanganui on the return journey from Auckland.
