TOURING TEAMS
BAD FOR FOOTBALL OPINION OF WANGANUI MEN. The opinion of Mr Harry Divers, manager of the touring Otago League team, that too much time is spent in touring by sporting teams finds favour with many of Wanganui’s business men, some of whom arc officials of sports clubs and associations. “If 1 had my way,” said Mr R. PLondon, secretary of the Wanganui Rugby Union, 11 there would be no representative football. Too much time and money is wasted on sending teams to play in other towns, to the disregard of grade games. I think that cups should bc done away with. They arc encouraging players to play to win, no matter how, instead of playing for the. sake of the game.” The statements were echoed by other officials on the Rugby Union and business men of the city.
During the. past season five representative teams have visited Wanganui and Wanganui has played several games away from home, besides going on tour for eight days. There weze junior representative touring teams as well which played away from homfc.
“I think that every representative footballer spends about two or three Weeks a year playing football in working time,” said Air London, ‘‘and of course players like Cooke and members of the All Black team spend nearly all the winter in sport.”
