CLOSE FINISHES

LAUGHING PRINCE WINS ECLIPSE STAKES AGAIN WANGANUI SPRING MEETING HAS SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION By “KESTREL.” There can be no doubting the success that attended the concluding day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting on Saturday, for though the we ther was threatening early and kept away a nnmber of would-be country visitors there was the usual increased attendance for the second day. Nothing more thrilling than the Eclipse Stakes finish could be desired, and the victory of Laughing Prince, the first favourite to score at the meeting, was a very popular one. It was a Wanganui triumph for horses owned or trained in the district filled the places.

The publie had a better Innings than had been the case on the opening day, when the downfall of .every favourite must have proved unpalatable to backers. Laughing Prince was the first to break the run of *‘outs’ l and then Singleton scored in the Railway Hack, while the last event of the day also went Io the elect of backers, Silvermine paying a royal price for a favourite. Continuing his successful innings of the first day the Fordell mentor, F. Tilley, saddled up Cashier, who deadheated with Desert Lad in the Spring Hack, and Laughing Prince, winner of the Eclipse Stakes. The priuicipal handicap event on the day’s card, the Higgie Handicap, was won by the Wellington-owned and Trentham trained Royal Game. who stored a narrow victory from the littlefan cied Te Koroke. A popular success was that of Silv ermine in the Owen Handicap, the second leg of the “double,” the Catmint gelding winning in the colours of his owner-breeder, Air A. Alexander, of New Plymouth. Mr T. A. Duncan had a great innings at the meeting, providing the winners of three events, while in another Cashier dead-heated with Desert Lad for first place. The first two-year-old race of the season, the Debutante Stokes, was also a draw on Saturday, being contested by fifteen youngsters, some of them more ur less green, among these being the winner, a shapely daughter of that successful brood mare Simper, by the imported Paper Money. The favourite, i rancolin, was second.

Perhaps the most remarkable feature of the meeting was the closeness of the auishes in most of the events, for on Saturday only one race was won by more than a neck margin, and in one I a dead-heat was recorded. It may be .-’aid that Air W .P. Russell, the judge, emerged from the ordeal with credit <tnd his decisions were never questioned. To the handicapper, Air H. Coyle, belong some of the laurels, while Air C. O’Connor got the fields away with his customary success at the starting- , lever.

Once again the management of the clerical department was up to the usual Wanganui standard. The totalizator figures for the day showed a slight decrease over the amount handled on the corresponding day last year, the sum of £26,493 being handled, against £27,057 10s twelve months ago, while for the meeting an acceptable increase of £2987 10s was shown, £49,263 being handled, as compared with £46,275 10s in 1927.

A description of the racing, with full details of the fields, is given below: The Juveniles’ First Race. Thg fifteen carded for the Debutante •Stakes paraded and Francolin (£494) was entrusted with most money, Clever (£4olj and Speed Light (£398) being next backed. The favourite was smartest on her feet and led out f ro m Courtlike, Coon Song, Clev.er, Roman Lake, Rule Britannia and Pont d’Or. There was little change crossing the top, where Francolin, Coartlike, Coon Song, Speed Light, Clever, Roman Lake and Pont d’Or was the order. When they straightened up for the run to the judge Speed Light got to the favourite and beat her home by a short head, with. Courtlike a length ami a-half away. Half a length away came Clever with Coon Song, Ducllona and Pom d’Or following. Praeda and Tobaccoland were next and Alloy and AlodesL.iam last. Pclyphemus Prevails.

Cohesion and Beaumont were evenly backed in the Gonviile Hurdles, each carrying £446, while Brigadier Bill ( £393) and Vexatious (£358) were also ••ell supported. Beaumont and Whisogne went out to make the pace and the pair led over the first fence 1 rum Brigadier Bill and Olympic. Past rhe stands the first time Whisogne, Beaumont and Brigadier Bill were in line, with Olympic and Vexatious together two lengths back and Cohesion, I'roilus, Polyphemus and Kilburn following. Going into the back stretch 1 roiluo ran into the leid from Beaumont, Cohesion. Whisogne, Brigadier Bill and O.ympie. being three lengths in front at the far turn Polyphemus went up alongside Beaumont crossing the top and turned for home just be hind Troilus. with Beaumont and Vexatious next. Troilus was overhauled by Polypaemiis at the last obstacle an.i tncn Vexatious challenged, the pair coming away from the field to light out a close finish, Polyphemus prevailing by a length, with Troilus three lengths away, four lengths ahead of Beaumont. Next in order were Cohesion, Olympic and Whisogne. Dead-Heat in Spring Hack. The Spring Hack Handicap was another even belting race, Te Atiawa (£532), Desert Lad (£503), Banket (£479) and D£rmod (£425) carrying most money, with Cashier entrusted 'V’tl £365. After a considerable delay they got away well. I’poko getting chopped out, while Banket, Desert Lad ami Cashier lcr1» out from Callanmore. Monsogne, Denier and Te Atiawa. At the four furlongs Banket was showing

the way to Desert Lad, Cashier, Denier, Callanmore, Alarica and Te Atiawa, and the order was the same at the home turn. Banket was smothered by Desert Lad when the judge was sighted and then Cashier threw out a challenge lat the distance and the pair fought out a neck and neck finish, flashing i past the post locked together. Callan- | more got up to beat Banket by a neck I for third place, three lengths behind ! the dead-heaters, while next to finish jwere Monsogne, Alarica, Denier and i Upoko. A Great Finish. The Eclipse Stakes, as anticipated, I was a great race. The nine acceptors : were saddled up and the public made last year’s winner favourite, Laughing Prince (£852), Reremoana (£785), I Kiosk (£521), King Lu (£440), Lucky i Light (£414) being the order in which I they were supported. From a good ! start King Lu led out from The Hawk, ( Kiosk, Lucky Light, Laughing Prince, I Reremoana and Alask, this being the . order as they raced for the back, j Kiosk was actually the leader as they passed the five furlong post, King Lu, 'The Hawk, Lucky Light, Alask, Rere- • moana and Laughing Prince following in that order, while at the four Lucky I Light was alongside Kiosk, with Mask, . Reremoana and The Hawk next. Lucky . Light and Kiosk piloted the field across [the top with Alask and Reremoana I next and Laughing Prince, The Hawk, and King Lu moving up fast. Lucky Light, Kiosk and The Hawk came • round the bend together and then ’Laughing Prince put in his claim and Afask also challenged. The field spread across the straight and a rare finish ensued, Laughing Prince beating Kiosk by half a head, with Alask a short neck away and Reremoana half a head j further back in fourth berth. King Lu was right alongside Reremoana and then came Staghunter, Lucky Light, Full Feather and The Hawk.

Singleton Makes Amends. Singleton (£671) Holus Bolus (£531) and Vigilance (£496), were best backea ! in the Bial way Hack Handicap Green Acre led out Horn the start, being folI lowed by Vigilance, Avoncourt, Baskier, Lucy Rose, Teremoana and Holus j Bolus, and this was the order down the 1 back stretch. On the turn out of the ' back Green Acre piloted Holus Bolus, ’ Baskier and Avoncourc, with Singleton I moving up fast. The favourite crossi ed the top behind Green Acre. Vigil- ' ance and Holus Bolus, while Sovena, jLucy Bose, Avoncourt. and Baskier fol- • lowed him into the straight. Singleton I asserted himself in the run home but ' Gren Acre hung out well, the favourite ■ however, beating trie outsider past the | post by a neck, with Lucy Rose half j a length away in third place. Sovena was fourth and Vigilance, Teremoana, I Holus Bolus and Aietellus followed in that order. Royal Game’s Narrow Win. [ Valkon (£1042), was twice as well I backed as Paitonu (£565), in the I Higgie Handicap, with Queen Arch [(£39B; a little better backed than the Black Alint —Royal Game bracket i (£384). When they were l.et go Valkon took up the role of pacemaker from Pangolin, Royal Game and Bcnj zora, but passing the stands Pangolin I was slightly ahead of Valkon, who was j followed out of the straight by Royal Game, Te Koroke, Benzora, Horomea, I Talisker and Vivo. Into the back I stretch Valkon and Royal Game were ; out in front of Pangolin, Te Koroke, j Alint Leaf, Benzora, Horomea, Vivo, 'Queen Arch, Nukumai, and Paitonu. i Across the top Valkon and Boyal Gaine ■ were the pilots, being three lengths ahead of l’e Koroke, Pangolin, Alint Leaf, Queen Arch, Black Alint, Nukumai and Benzora, and turning for home Royal Game had assumed the lead from Valkon, who was closely followed by Te Koroke, Nukumai and Pangolin. Royal Game held his own in the run up the straight to stall off Te Koroke's challenge and win by a short head, with Nukumai two and a-half lengths away, just ahead of Valkon. Queen Arch was fifth and Mint Leaf, Shining ’Armour, Horomea, Talisker, Black Alint and Benzora was the order of the 1 others. Flying Shot Wins Comfortably. For a five-horse race the Moutoa Hack was a great betting event. Aloorei gas (£1006), Limosa (£619), and Kawhakina (£610), carrying most ' money, while Flying Shot carried nearly j as much as the latter two. Limosa got knocked back at the barrier rise «<nd Alooregas led Flying Shot, KawhaI kina and Quarter Deck out of the (straight. Running to the back stretch Flying Shot slipped into the lead and ' was three lengths in front at the , five furlongs, Quarter Deck and Moore--1 gas being followed by Kawhakina and i Limosa. The last-named ran up to the ■ bunch crossing the top but Flying Shot I was still well in front as they rounded ! the turn, where Limosa ran wide. (Nothing could make an impression on i Flying Shot over the final stages and the Campfire gelding ran home an easy ! winner by a length and a-half. Quar|tor Deck and Alooregas had a great i tussle up the straight for second money, • Quarter Deck prevailing by a short

head. Kawhakina and Limosa were well back. Siiveimins’s Fine Price. The large field of seventeen went to the post for the open sprint, the Owen Handicap, with which the meeting concluded, aud in a good pool Silvermine (£517), Tea Time (£515), Oration (£511), and Partaga (£502) were evenly supported, with Helotis (£428), and Keddar (£357) next best fancied. Tea Time led out from barrier rise, being followed by Helotis, Lysander, Silvermine and Lady’s Boy, but when they had settled down Helotis was piloting Silverminfc, Tea Time, Limited, Lady’s Boy, Keddar, Lysander, Kilperon and Partaga. Thus they passed the threefurlong post and on the bend for home Helotis was still in front of Silvermine, Limited, Tow% Bird and Keddar. Silvermine assumed the lead at the distance and then Keddar got Lis head in front, but in the last few strides Silvermine came again to get the verdict by a head, with Partaga in third place, two lengths away. Broad Acre, Starboard Light, Sagittarius and Helotis were next to finish and were followed closely by a bunch comprised of Imdy’s Boy, Tea Time, Oration and Goshawk. The winner paid a fine price for a favourite. FULL DETAILS. DEBUTANTE STAKES. Of 175 sovs.; 4| furlongs). 3 Light (Air W. T. Hazlett) b f by Paper Alouey —Simper, 8.0, T. A case that aroused a considerable amount of interest at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting was brought to a conclusion on Saturday after the first race, when the judicial committee delivered their decision iu what was referred to as the Valkon case. The text of the report was as follows: —“The judicial committee held an inquiry into the running of Valkon in the Alarangai Handicap on rhe first day of the meeting, and after hearing the evidence of A. E. Cox, trainer, E. A. Keesing, jockey, and Air W. Harper, father of the owner, Air P. G. Harper (who was not present on the first day) the committee are of opinion that the horse Valkon was not run on its merits and that Cox and Keesing were, guilty of corrupt practice and arc disqualified for twelve months. The owner, Air P. G. Harper, is exonerated from any complicity in the matter.” THE RE-HANDICAPS AVONDALE AND AWAPUNI. The Bloodstock Registry was the purchaser at 13,000 guineas. When Lord Furness bought Love Oil for 7100 guineas, critics considered the price too high, but his judgment has been vindicated as the sale of her three foals has realised a total of 35,175 guineas.

THE WONDER HORSE LIMERICK BRILLIANT IN HILL STAKES WIN TREMENDOUS PACE IN WEIGHT-FOR-AGE AT ROSEHILL [ Australian Press Assn. ] Received September 16, 5.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Sept. 15. The Rosehill races were held to-day in fine weather. The going was good. Limerick was so far behind the leaders at the half-mile in the Hill Stakes that bis supporters became anxious, but the “ wonder horse,” as he is now hailed after his twelfth successive win, had the race won a furlong from home and literally ate up the ground, finishing at a tremendous pace. Prince Humphrey’s form made a good impression on his Derby supporters, he showing up much better than ‘ did Raasay. Results: — Rosehill Guineas. MOLLISON, 8.5 1 RAMULUS, 8.5 2 ROSCREA, 8.5 3 Eleven started. Turning into the straight Mollison was just ahead of Ramulus. At the distance the two were fighting desperately for the lead with Bob’s March and Roscrea next. TO RIDE LIMERICK ROY REED ACCEPTS OFFER. IMPORTANT A.J.C. EVENTS. (By “Kestrel.”) With the suspension of Maurice McCarteu for a month by the A.J.C. over Limerick’s running iu the Chelmsford Stakes, when it was considered that the Limond gelding was allowed to interfere with another horse, Air H. A. Knight was left without a New Zealand jockey to ride the champion in his important engagements at the spring meeting at Kandwick at the end of September and the beginning of October. Many have been the conjectures as to rhe likelihood of a prominent jockey from New Zealand going across to do the riding, but this writer is able to state that R. Reed has accepted an offer to ride Limerick in his A.J.C. engagements and will leave New Zealand cither this week or early next week for that purpose. Interviewed on Saturday during the progress of the Wanganui meeting Reed stated that he was not quite certain whether lie would be riding at Avondale next Saturday and Monday. If he were required to ride Jeffeyd’s team at the northern fixture he would leave on Tuesday of next week for Sydney. “Until I can get into communication with Mr Jefferd I’ll not be certain what day I’ll be sailing,” said Reed, "but I’d prefer to be over there as soon as possible. After Ihe A.J.C. meeting I will come straight back to New Zealand.” Certainly no better horseman could be sent from Now Zealand to pilot New Zealand’s champion horse than the Dominion’s premier jockey.
